Amanda watched the adults talking while Fura toyed with a small black pebble. Now and then it would slip her grasp and she would wrestle with it again. It was amazing how that cub could keep herself entertained.
Just then, Semira called Amanda over. "Amanda, you haven't eaten all day!" she scolded as Amanda trotted up. "Aren't you hungry?"
Amanda opened her mouth to reply but her stomach's grumbling was far louder. Sighing, Semira pushed a small piece of zebra meat toward her. "Eat it, you look half-starved." Amanda looked down at the zebra and felt sick at the memory of the hunt. "I'm not hungry mom." she said, pushing it away.
"Don't be silly, dear. You're as thin as a stick." her mother said. Then, seeming to have read her mind, she added more gently, "This one was old anyway. It was going to die soon."
Reluctantly, Amanda took back the zebra she had pushed away. When she was done, she walked over to Fura, who was done playing with her pebble. "Let's go splash in the puddles!" said Fura excitedly. Amanda just shook her head and kept on walking. She stopped when she arrived in front of Simba.
"Sir?" she asked him timidly. The great king looked down. Amanda gulped. She would never stop being afraid of him. "How's Zeke? Is he gonna die?" she asked, her eyes wide with fear.
