In my opinion, I think that was done on purpose. ^^ Much like Nala stated directly to Simba within the movie, "You want so much to walk the path expected of you", which indicates that he's trying his hardest to folow in Mufasa's paw prints. Then, at the end of the movie, he finally learns that it's okay to walk your own path when the situation calls for it. ^^ I also think since Simba idolized his father so much, it would be only natural for him to want to be exactly like him, so I think Disney did a nice job in portraying what Simba might have acted like. ^^
