Interesting question, and I seemingly have no real answer for it. The only explanation I can give is that the film directors didn't want to make the movie longer with the added battle and they wanted to focus on the main character's battle.

Interesting question. Now, if there was a sentry on the edge of the Pridelands, perhaps the Outlanders killed her before she could get away. It could all be a censoring explanation.

Now you make me want to see them fight at pride rock though...

It's because they're lions. Lions don't station guards on walls or dig trenches to protect their land. They mark their territory, but don't hang around waiting for intruders. Prides of lions coexist in the wild all the time like this.

I think that every lioness was at Pride Rock at the time. Maybe it was dinner time or maybe they don't have guards.
