What is the circle of life?

Okay, the way I see the circle of life are the way it's explained in "Circle of Life": The life stages of a creature and everything that happens to it during that life.

"It's the circle of life,
and it moves us all,
through despair and hope,
through faith and love,
'till we find our place,
on the path unwinding,
in the circle,
the circle of life"

Despair, hope, faith and love are parts of our life. "the path unwinding" the song is talking about is the place you truly belong in your life before you die. Simba's place was the be the King of the Pride Lands. "You must take your place in the circle of life. Remember who you are. You are my son, and the one true king!" At least that's the way I see it. Listen to Circle of Life and you'll understand.


...we were taught this in the first grade of Junior High school, too. (Though the meaning changes in TLK a bit, gets more spiritual)

I always thought it was connected to birth, death and re birth. Not re birth in the sense of reincarnation but in the sense of a new life beginning when another ends. At least that's the impression I got from watching the film. I have seen this kind of idea going around in the plots of other films too, it's a surprisingly strong theme for a Disney movie to be, and one of the reasons why I loved The Lion King so much.

It is the utter interdependence of every creature on every other creature. That means that for Mufasa to live, he depended upon the antelope. For baby Simba, he depended on Mufasa. Mufasa died protecting him, and his body returned to the earth where it would feed the grass to feed the antelope, which would feed Simba. Everything is connected: everything lives and dies. It is limited, but infinite. I actually just wrote an essay about it for my Ethics class.
