Well Many People said it could be shadows, or another color mistake.
Could be one of those two...
Or Could be another animator,
I guess that it's just a shadow, BTW, did anyone searched on MLK2?
Maybe the answers for that question is on the second film...there are many parts that you can See Simba's Ears. ;]

I'm talking about adults.. >>
I highly doubt the design of adult male ear rims would be different to female and male cubs, and adult females. Seriously, that's just being picky.
But it's possible, isn't it? :P We can't be sure, we're just guessing. xD Unless someone e-mails Disney about it..

No. Under no possibility would adult male ear rims be that different to every other example. Just picky.

Since those dark parts only appear in that one scene, I'm tempted to brush them off as just an odd shading job.

We actually do have a couple of examples of adult male lions with ear rims. Scar has some, but they're very different than all the other examples of ear rims, and often difficult to make out since they're so faint. Still, if you look carefully, you can make them out in the majority of his scenes, so it's not just a one-time shading anomaly.

He's sometimes illustrated with much darker, solid ear rims in picture books, and it's a similar story with adult Kovu.

I always believed they were ear rims, but there is no actual proof this theory is acurate. The shading idea is probably our best bet, because if you look in the second image you posted, he was a lighter shade of 'ear rims' that are shadows.

Of course no on really knows for sure....

I have noticed that one quite a few Lion King toys they actually painted or used a darker piece of fur in the case of plush for the shadow inside the ears. Nala has it too. I always wondered why, But that is the way it looks in the movie, although frequently the shadow is not right.

And that just shows how merchandise can go wrong sometimes. But still, Simba doesn't have them in the film.
