I love The Lion King because it hit home at a very big point in my life.
I identified as Simba, and still do as he was grieving and trying to move on after the death of a loved one. My sister stood in as Mufasa. It came out the year she died, and from that point on I was drawn in. There is something familiar and warming about it, kind of like that favorite blanket or stuffed animal you had as a child. It reminds me that there is indeed a time for all of us, and we do each have our place.
Not only is it about the movie, it is about the music. It is so moving and inspiring that one can't help but feel tied into the whole experience. The music also brings to light the other cultures that are out there, not just our own. One By One is a perfect example of that. The video to it is so moving and truthfully makes me cry at times. The second album they put out Rhythm of the Pridelands was and still is one of my favorite albums. Lebo M is a musical wonder, and kudos to him for shining the light on how beautiful Africa's heritage can be.
