This power is indeed amazing, but he could have still affected Simba in this way whilst he was still alive.

This part of the movie always make me tear up. Heart is the most important part of any movie. This is obvious. When Mufasa returns to tell Simba to "Remember who [he] is", it is an eternally powerful scene. It is immortal not just in the sense that everybody knows it, but that nobody will ever forget it.
