The whole point of that part of the conversation is for Simba to keep Nala with him without having to address his past. It's all he wanted.

I wish Simba just told Nala- imagine how much that would have changed the whole outcome- at least him saying it himself would have made it better than the way scar made it seem...but then again, him telling wouldnt have led to Scar admitting to his crime.

I think he wasn't thinking about them starving as much as how shunned he would be if he returned. He might not have understood the situation that well either- he saw that nala ran away, and why couldn't the others= it just seemed to farfetched for him to comprehend, I guess.

He would have never made it back, he believed that he had killed his own father. He had no explanation for his exile and his meeting with Nala would have gone awry.

Of corse not! Simba would never think like that and wouldn't let the pride down! He was just feeling that nobody needed him to come back home when Nala and everybody thought he was dead all those years. He was still remembering about Muffy's death. When Simba was founded by Timon and Pumbaa and they asked what was wrong, he didn't want to tell and Timon was telling him "You gotta put your past behind you. Look kid, bad things happen and you can't do anything about it right?" Simba replies "Right". He also felt that Scar reign was just in the place but it wasn't good.
