I actually found this scene a bit insulting, and the reason being is that Mufasa took so long to show up. Why didn't he show up before, like when Timon and Pumbaa where CORRUPTING his son? Exactly what was keeping him? And if that wasn't bad enough, Mufasa doesn’t even say anything applicable to the situation to Simba. He says, “Remember who you are.” Well who’s that, the jerk or the vegetable? How about this: Instead of remember who you are, learn who you are.

How could he save him from them, if he's not alive?

Because it's his spirit telling him the right path, he can't get him away from Timon and Pumbaa when he's not alive, but he can offer his advice, and he did. So I don't see what you feel the problem is here?

Well, first of all,not considering the story, there's always the need of a dramatic build-up in movies.
Then, what's the point of telling a cub this when he won't understand it,and what's the point of telling this to a teenager when he's not even ready nor strong enough to be defeat Scar and be a king. Rafiki finding out about Simba being alive and Nala's appearing was the perfect time to appear to Simba.
And it wouldn't he halfway that interesting and dramatic if Mufasa has told him just to get his behind to Pride Rock. It also wouldn't be in Mufasa's nature to say something like that. And well,he said what he had to say, cause Simba did return.

You're kind of contradicting what you said in your original post. You said that he couldn't save him from them because he wasn't alive. Then you go on to say that his spirit shows up and tells him the right path. So what you originally said was he can't show up because he's dead, but he shows up later in the film. So is he more or less dead than he was during Simba's childhood/teen years? No.

Anyway, my problem is that Mufasa took SO long to show up and guide Simba down the right path. He just watched as his son was corrupted by two of the most nasty, despicable, despiseable Disney villians (oh right, they're supposed to be good guys too) I've ever seen on screen. Why didn't Mufasa's spirit think it would be more plausible to show up while these two were teaching him to be stupid, lazy, and selfish?

I think Mufasa was waiting for Simba to seek him out to be honest.

In this case, which I feel more inclined to agree with, the makers of this film had NO reason to establish this kid as someone, and then have Timon and Pumbaa completely brainwash all of the previous character's traits. That said, why did we even have to watch the first part of the film? It would have been much more appropriate to start the film when he first met Timon and Pumbaa.

When Simba was a cub/teen, he wouldn’t have been able to defeat Scar and become king. Mufasa had to wait until Simba was grown because only then would Simba be able to take his place in the Circle of Life by saving his Pride and taking the throne.

Sure Simba wasn’t meant to be raised with the philosophy of Hakuna Matata, but if it weren’t for Timon and Pumbaa, Simba would have died in the desert.. Sure, Disney could have made some better characters to raise Simba, but the movie is after all about how Simba runs away from his responsibilities and his past, before he’s finally forced to confront everything and set it right. But before he could fix anything, he would have to grow up.

---
If the movie hadn’t started until Simba met Timon and Pumbaa, we wouldn’t know anything about Simbas past and the reason for his exile, the whole point of the movie would be gone. TLK is about Simbas life and his journey to find his place in the Circle of Life.
