Nuka's death was very sad...

It makes me a little angry at Simba, too. He couldn't care a little more? I know he hates the Outlanders, but he just kind of ignored the fact that he killed another lion.

I don't think Simba killed Nuka. While Simba was escaping, Nuka was chasing him and had a weak grip on Simba's heel and he lost his grip as Simba pulls down a log and hits Nuka, causing him to roll down, later, getting hit in the face.

I agree that Nukas death was very sad, but I don’t think Simba realized that Nuka got killed. Simba was just climbing up the hill of logs and barely escaping after Nuka nearly pulled him down. It didn’t seem like Simba saw what happened to Nuka..
Besides, it was an accident, Simba didn’t intentionally cause Nukas death.

I'd say his death was necessary. His death was the reason Kovu was cast out by the Outlanders, got his scar, and then was exiled by Simba (for an afternoon), which was important. It clarified his allegiances. Nuka's death was also what enraged Zira enough to declare open war on Pridelands, which lead to that nifty film climax and feel-good, let's-love-everyone-even-though-they-tried-to-kill-us conclusion.
