Characters:
Simba: KiarasMate
Kovu: SimbasMate
Zira: KiarasMate
Mufasa: SimbasMate
Scar: KiarasMate

------------

Kovu yawned, and looked around the cave. His family was sleeping soundly in the den, and soft snores were escaping their wet noses. Kovu stretched up, putting his rear end high in the air, grunting as he did so. The horizon was high in the sky. It was a another blistering day out side, in the Pride lands. The sun was beating down on the dry earth, making all the trees look lush and green. Kovu sighed. Another day, and he would be pretending to be someone's friend. Though, he loved him, as a friend of course. Simba was his name. Kovu, the chosen one of Scar, Simba's uncle and Mufasa's brother. Kovu was destined to kill Mufasa, Scar's brother, Simba's father. Though, his friend had no idea. Zira, Kovu's mother wanted him to use Simba, in order for him to get closer to Mufasa. Kovu really didn't like this plan either. It hurted him. Simba really thought he was his best friend. Kovu got up, and ran out into the sun. It beamed down on his brown fur, and made him hot. Scanning the savanna for some shade, Kovu walked around, looking for his "friend" Simba.

Panting lightly as his small paws carried him across the lush grass of the savannah, Simba’s eyes darted from side to side, clearly looking for something in particular. The young prince had been awake at the crack of dawn and had spent the early part of the day alongside his father Mufasa, learning the ways of being a king. While he enjoyed spending time with his dad, to whom he looked up to with the utmost respect, there was one thing the golden furred cub looked forward to more, and that was spending time with his best friend Kovu. The two cubs were practically inseparable once they were together and even though Simba’s duties of learning how to be future king sometimes got in the way of his and his best friend’s free time, things always seemed perfect whenever he was with Kovu.

Assuming that his best friend would already be on the look out for him, Simba kept a sharp eye out for him, knowing that he’d be fairly easy to spot from the way Kovu’s fur color contrasted against the surrounding environment. It didn’t take long until the young cub caught sight of movement coming from several hundred paces away from where he currently was situated at. Adopting a cheeky looking smile as his father’s former words rang through his mind, Simba quickly slowed his strides as his body slunk downwards, his paws now treading lightly upon the surface of the grass as he stalked closer towards the distant figure of Kovu, all the while, repeating Mufasa’s words in his mind as he did so.

Stay low to the ground. Try not to make a sound.

Inch by inch, Simba managed to sneak his way within a few paws length away from where his best friend was standing. Unfortunately for the young cub, his own eagerness and excitement got the better of him as he quickly found himself being gripped by an unshakeable fit of laughter from just how clueless Kovu was to his presence. Spotting his best friend turning to look in his general direction, Simba knew that his cover had been blown and quickly leapt out from where he had been hiding amongst the thick vegetation, his small fore legs extended in a last minute attempt to pounce the brown furred cub to the ground while he called out in a playful voice.

”Rawr!”

Kovu fell to the ground, getting dirt up his nose, and all over his fur, making his fur look even dirtier. Kovu giggled, as he playfully pushed Simba off of him. Kovu shook off all the dust off of his fur, and sneezed. He hated dirt, especially when it got up his nose. Though Kovu was willingly going to get dirty, if he was around Simba. He was such a playful cub, Kovu didn't understand how he could be so playful, and he never got tired. Kovu gave Simba a gentle smile, as soon as he got all the dirt out of his fur. He cringed at the thought of what Zira would do to him, if she ever saw him playing at home. Kovu turned towards his friend.

"That was a good pounce, Simba! But, you kind of gave yourself away there." Kovu said, giving Simba some praise. Kovu was never good at pouncing. All his mother had taught him was how to hunt, and kill other lions. He was somewhat disappointed with the fact that he was never allowed to play, but he was only allowed to fight. Kovu looked at his surroundings. There were elephants and giraffes struggling to get past one another's herd, so they could be the first to get a drink from the waterhole. Kovu twitched his tail and chuckled softly. He then looked at Pride rock. There was a strong build figure standing on the top of it, his great mane blowing softly in opposite directions, then it was originally parted, making the strong lion's mane look a bit messy. That lion was Mufasa, the one that Kovu was destined to kill. Kovu shook that thought out of his head. He would not think about that. No, not yet.

Kovu looked back over at Simba, smiling since his friend's playful expression has quickly chased the violent thoughts from Kovu's mind. "What do you wanna do today, buddy?" Kovu asked Simba. Kovu was dead out of ideas of what to do with Simba lately. His mind had been too focused on what he was supposed to do when he was older. And plus, Simba always came up with a great idea. It's like he never ran out.

Connecting squarely with his best friend’s body, the two cubs went tumbling through the grass, Simba ending up landing atop Kovu in the end with a triumphant looking smile etched upon his muzzle. Taking the hint from feeling the brown furred cub’s fore paws pushing against him, Simba nimbly rolled off of Kovu before taking a seat where he was, his eyes locked upon his best friend as he watched him sneeze from the dirt that managed to clog itself in his nostrils. Perking up his ears as Kovu’s words reached him, Simba’s smile broadened from the praise his buddy was lavishing upon him, making the young cub feel quite accomplished. Puffing out his chest in a proud display, Simba gave a nod in Kovu’s general direction before replying in an eager voice.

”Yeah, but you just looked so funny Kovu and I was so close to you. My dad was teaching me how to pounce today and he gave me some pretty good advice. I’ll have to show you how to pounce one of these days so we can team up against Zazu.”

Noticing his best friend’s stare shifting towards the distant figure of Pride Rock, Simba followed Kovu’s gaze until he spotted the same thing that the brown furred cub had. Seeing his father standing atop the promontory of Pride Rock was nothing new to the golden furred cub however and Simba quickly lost interest in this fact. Meeting up with Kovu’s emerald orbs as his friend turned to face him once again, Simba had a feeling that it was going to be up to him to decide on what the two of them were going to partake in today, seeing as lately, or at least to Simba anyways, it seemed as though that Kovu’s mind had been slightly sidetracked. Still, this never really bothered Simba much as he always had a plethora of ideas on how to keep the both of them entertained. Today’s foray into adventure was an easy one to choose, seeing how hot the day had already become. Taking a cue from the other animals around them, Simba responded to Kovu’s inquiry as he stood back up upon all fours before padding over to his best friend’s side.

”Well, I don’t know about you Kovu, but a swim in The Waterhole sounds fun right now. It’s so hot out and jumping into the cool water seems like the best thing ever. How about it? We can even race there if you wanna, unless you’re afraid you’ll lose?”

Sporting a sly grin, Simba gave Kovu’s chest a playful nudge with his fore paw as if to coax his best friend into taking him up upon his offer. The two cubs would often compete with one another in various forms of recreation although it was all for fun and no one ever felt belittled if they were beaten by the other. It was just something to do to pass the time and in this case, would clearly build up their need to cool themselves down in the end. Readying himself alongside the brown furred cub, Simba gave his small physique a quick stretch before positioning himself for the race. Swishing his tail in anticipation, Simba turned to glance towards his best friend before staring off in the direction of The Waterhole. Poised to sprint at the first sign of Kovu’s acceptance to his proposal, Simba waited with faded breath as his muscles tensed, his voice ringing out into the open savannah as the young cub called out.

”Okay, in three…two…one…GO!”

Kovu smirked. He liked the thought of teaming up with Simba, on Zazu. Zazu was pretty stupid, in Kovu's point of view. And sometimes had no idea what was going on in his surroundings because he was too busy babbling about the current events in the Pride Lands. Kovu had never pounced on him before, and he couldn't stop himself from chuckling at what Zazu would do when he and Simba pounced on him. He'd probably be offended, but who cares? They are cubs after all.

Kovu nodded at Simba's new conception on what they should do. He thought it was perfect. A swim would be good right now, and the sun was making his fur feel like it was baking, in the hot desert. Sometimes this annoyed Kovu. Having such a dark fur color, and being hot all the time. As for Simba, he had a golden colored pelt, and so he could stay cooler. Kovu sighed at the heat, that was beaming down on him. He stretched some more, and then he chuckled at Simba's remark.

"Pfft, I bet I can beat you to the Water Hole. It will be as easy as breathing."

Kovu pounced up in the air, and started running towards the waterhole. He wasn't sure if Simba was going to catch up with him or not. He hoped that he wouldn't because Kovu really wanted to show Simba that he could win at this race. Kovu's paws were slamming against the ground, in some sort of a beat to him, that matched his running pace, as it made a storm of dust emerge and fly up from under his small dirty paws. He giggled. Kovu was having so much fun! He knew he would win! He would!

"Hey Simba, eat my dust!" Kovu panted, but tried to make his yell loud enough so his friend could be warned that he was going to win the race to The Waterhole.

In the blink of an eye, the race was on. Spotting Kovu taking off like a bat out of hell, Simba struggled to keep in toe with his best friend. Despite the age similarities between the two cubs, their different abilities to which they excelled at were already beginning to showcase themselves. Although being built slightly bigger than Simba himself, Kovu moved quite gracefully through the grasslands, his heavy steps kicking up clouds of dust to which Simba himself did his best to avoid. Still, Simba was no slouch when it came to quickness himself and eventually, the two cubs were neck and neck with one another. Now, the only thing coming between the two friends was sheer stamina. Who would last the longest. Fortunately for the two cubs, this wasn’t a factor as they hadn’t been all that far from their final destination of The Waterhole to begin with.

As the distant figure of The Waterhole rapidly approached, Simba’s strides purposefully became slower as he allowed himself to fall slightly behind Kovu, giving his best friend the false sense that he was going to win the race. Simba however, had other underlying motives to his actions as he trailed directly behind the brown furred cub, having to slightly shield his eyes from the dirt that was being kicked up from Kovu’s paws as he ran. Timing his next move almost flawlessly, Simba put forth one last burst of speed as the two youngsters reached the bank of The Waterhole. In one swift motion, Simba leapt forward, colliding himself against Kovu’s body, resulting in the two cubs tumbling straight into the cool pool in front of them. While the initial shock of the cold water surrounding his body was quite intense, Simba quickly grew accustom to the refreshing sensation as his small head broke through the surface of the water. Gasping for breath and looking about to ensure that Kovu was alright as well, Simba chuckled uproariously as he spotted his best friend popping into view. Dawning a devious smile, the golden furred cub began splashing water towards the brown furred cub while exclaiming in an excited voice.

”Ha! I might have eaten your dust Kovu but now you can drink my water!”

Dipping his muzzle back beneath the surface of the water, Simba inhaled a muzzle full of the cool substance, his cheeks bulging from the amount of content being stored within his maw. Breeching the surface once again, the young cub took aim and fired his load from within his mouth, targeting Kovu’s face as he did so. The water felt so relaxing and being with his best friend, Simba seemed to not have a care in the world as he continued to paddle his small body through the crystal clear waters, his eyes staying locked upon Kovu to anticipate any retaliation the brown furred cub might attempt.

Kovu shook his brown fur, his tuft going all over the place, while the water fell out of his fur. He giggled, and smiled at Simba. Kovu really thought he would've won, but it was OK with him that his best friend had won the race instead. Kovu dipped his head under water. The coolness of the water gave him instant relief, from his heat absorbed fur. How great it felt to be in for a swim, on a day like this! And he was with his best friend, so that made him even more happy. Kovu was never really happy at home, hence Zira's hate towards him. Even though she was his mother, Kovu was always blamed when bad things happened. Though when his parents got mad at him, he has always tried to avoid them. He snapped out of thought, and turned to his friend, with a gentle smile.
"Great job beating me, Simba! I'm sure one day after your father, you will be the greatest King there ever was!"

What a sore lier Kovu was. Giving his best friend false hopes. He knew with every feeling in his heart that he was lying. And Simba didn't even know it. Kovu would have to give himself punishment for that one. He couldn't even bare think of what Simba would do, if he found out that Kovu was really using him just to kill Mufasa, so Kovu's butt hurt father could become King and take over the Pridelands. As well as put everyone in great hell, he might add. Kovu wondered if he would ever tell Simba about what he was going to do. Though, he figured that if he killed Mufasa, he would have to blame it on his father, since he didn't want to loose Simba as a friend, and it was the only way to keep innocent. But who knew, maybe Simba wouldn't believe him. Kovu hoped that if he did tell Simba, that he wouldn't believe him. Then everything would be alright.

That was the main reason why Kovu didn't want to grow up. When he was a full adult lion, he would be sent out to kill Simba's father. And Kovu couldn't understand why Simba was so excited to be King. Kovu wondered that everyday. What was so special about being king? Was it that you could really do what ever you want, kick who ever you wanted out, and keep the lions and lionesses that you liked most? Kovu thought for a moment, and while he did so, he swam around The Waterhole. Only did he do a few laps when he decided that he wanted to ask Simba why he was excited so much to become the next king. But at the same time he didn't. Because Simba would never become king. But it would keep this annoying thought out of his head. He looked at his friend again, and smiled. Simba was so nice to him.

"Simba.. why is it that you are so excited to become King? What's so special about it?" Kovu grinned toothily at his friend, waiting for a complete answer. But Kovu didn't exactly know why he was really asking this question, and it wouldn't get him any further on his mission.

Blushing heavily from his best friend’s compliment, Simba couldn’t help but to feel proud from the way Kovu spoke of him. Mufasa had always taught him that being future king was a very important job and to know that the one other lion to whom he looked up to most in life, aside from his father, thought so highly of him already, it just made the young cub’s ego grow even more so. Trying to stay as modest as he could though, just for Kovu’s sake, Simba played it off as if it weren’t a big deal as he lazily floated on his back in the cool water before replying to his best friend’s remark in a nonchalant tone.

”I sure hope I will Kovu. From the way my dad talks about being king, it sounds like it’s going to be a really hard thing to do but I know I’ll always have you to count on since you’re my best friend after all and you’ll always help me out, right?”

Continuing to lounge within The Waterhole as he playfully paddled after the brown furred cub while the two of them relaxed together, Simba wasn’t expecting the next question that came out of Kovu’s muzzle. Halting where he was in the water, his small body bobbing carelessly in place as his legs kept him afloat, Simba had to think the question over in his mind before he was even able to verbalize a response. Usually Kovu never seemed all that interested in the fact that Simba was destine to become king of The Pride Lands, yet today, his best friend seemed overly inquisitive about the subject. Regardless of this fact however, Simba was more than happy to field his best friend’s inquiry as he spoke up in a casual voice.

”Well, I don’t really have a choice in the matter Kovu, seeing as I am next in line to be king but what’s not to be excited about. Wouldn’t you like to rule over these lands? Think about it. You’d be in charge of everything. You could do whatever you wanted and no one would ever tell you to go to bed or not to play with your food or anything like that. Plus, when I’m king, we can hang out together all day long! It’s going to be so awesome buddy! I can’t wait!”

Flashing an excited looking smile at Kovu, Simba swam his way over next to the brown furred cub before playfully placing his little fore paws upon his best friend’s shoulder before dunking him down into the water with a lighthearted laugh. Paddling away from his company in the hopes that he’d give chase, Simba did his best to try and change the subject so as not to dwell on the fact that he was going to be future king and his best friend wasn’t. Being unaware of his best friend’s situation however, Simba found himself posing a question of his own to Kovu as he once more rolled onto his back, letting the warm sunlight warm up his wet belly as he floated along the surface of The Waterhole.

”Say Kovu, what do you think it’s going to be like when we’re all grown up?”

Kovu smiled, and swam over to his best friend, giving him a gentle nuzzle. "If I weren't destined to kill your father, I'd most definitely help you out, Simba" Kovu was about to frown, but he hid it, keeping his feelings bottled up safe inside of him, so only he was the only one who knew how he truly felt. This hurt him, keeping things from Simba. Once again, he had to lie to Simba.

"Of course I'll be there to help you out buddy. I will always be here for you. No matter what. You can count on me!"
Kovu replied, holding his head up high, reassuring Simba that "he would always be here for him".

Kovu nodded in agreement. Of course he would like to rule over all the lands, in fact, he'd love it. He would exile his own Mother and Father. Just so he could be with Simba. And nothing would go wrong, and he wouldn't have to kill anyone because he knew that nobody was there to tell him what to do, besides his own self. Though those were bigger dreams, and they would never come true for Kovu, unless a miracle happened. And that, Kovu doubted very highly. He knew for sure that if he even had the chance of becoming king, that his father and mother wouldn't be very pleased with him, because Zira had told Kovu over and over again, that he was just living to kill. He wasn't living for a reason. Kovu was obviously alive because his mother and father needed a strong healthy and fully grown adult lion to fight off Mufasa. Exactly.. just to use him. That is why he was put on the face of this earth. That thought had bothered Kovu, and a lot. It sucked, just to live for someone else, and for them to use you. Just for their own selfish reasons. Kovu smiled at Simba, again.

"Well, I'm not exactly sure what it will be like when we're all grown up, Simba. You know, things aren't going to be as peaceful as they are now. I mean, things change. One day maybe someone else could be King. Who knows? But I know that won't happen because your father let everyone know that you're the next king! Anyways, I guess, we will just have t wait and see."

Kovu then had noticed his own tiredness, and he was getting a bit cold from The Waterhole. Though it was still blistering hot out, Kovu wanted to take a nap. But he stayed in the water, he didn't want to disappoint Simba, as they had just gotten into the water a few minutes or so ago. Kovu floated on his back, and closing his eyes he went into thought again. He knew that it wouldn't be too long, before he was a full adult. Kovu knew that he had to tell Simba, but at the same time, he didn't want to. He wanted to, because he wanted to tell the truth to Simba. Already has Kovu told Simba big fat nasty, and cold hearted lies. As well as false hopes for his future. He didn't want to tell Simba because he didn't know what he might do. Or maybe he was just paranoid. Kovu knew he should stop thinking of the thought. It made him mad, and depressed. But he couldn't stop thinking about it whenever he was around Simba. It was very hard, sometimes Kovu thought about not playing with Simba, at least just for a day, so he could get his mind off these thoughts for 24 hours. But he didn't because he knew that Simba wouldn't have anyone to play with, and Kovu couldn't bear the thought of Simba being all alone and bored. Plus, hanging out with Simba kept Kovu away from his parents.

Kovu didn't like his parents very much. His mother, Zira, was mean to him mostly every day. She would blame him for going out on his own, even if he had a chaperone with him. Though that hardly happened anymore, since he was a little older now. Zira was missing half of her left ear. Kovu was always wondering what had happened, but his mother always refused to speak of it. Scar, Kovu's father, was a mangy lion, with a Scar on his right eye. Kovu was told by his mother that he had gotten the wound from Scar's father, Ahadi. Kovu hadn't any idea who he was.

Kovu opened his eyes, snapping out of his thoughts. He then noticed that the sun was higher in the sky, then it was before. It was late afternoon, and it was still deadly hot. Kovu shifted, changing his position, so that he was on his tummy, swimming in the water once again. Kovu stuck out his pink tounge into the water, lapping up mouthfuls of the blue liquidy water, savoring it. Kovu suddenly felt the urge to star gaze tonight with Simba. As soon as his belly was full with water, Kovu swam over to Simba. He smiled again, and gave him a soft playfull push.

"Hey Simba, when it turns dark would you like to stargaze with me tonight?" Kovu asked excitedly. What was better then spending time with Simba tonight? Kovu had no plans on returning early to home. And if he did, it meant he had to deal with his mother and father again.

As refreshing as the water was, the relentless sunlight that beamed down upon the two recreating cubs was quickly zapping Simba’s strength. Following Kovu’s lead, Simba floated on his back and belly to try and expend as little energy as possible. The golden furred cub listened carefully to Kovu’s response to what he had asked him about being older. His best friend’s statement about someone else being king caused the intrigued cub to freeze where he was. Not understanding the underlying motives that Kovu’s words held, Simba was about to speak up about his best friend’s comment, when Kovu swam towards him and posed yet another question. Forgetting about his own inquiry for the moment, Simba happily nodded as he retorted in an excited voice.

”Oh that sounds totally fun Kovu. I’ll have to ask my dad but I’m sure it’ll be okay. How about we get out now though and dry off in the grass.”

Returning Kovu’s shove with a playful one of his own, Simba paddled over to the edge of The Waterhole before dragging his saturated body back onto dry land. Finding a comfortable spot within the lush grass to which he and his best friend could lounge at, Simba waited for Kovu to join him before the golden furred cub outstretched himself, allowing the hot rays of the sun to warm up his fur and rid himself of the excess water that clung to him. Figuring that the two of them would go back to Pride Rock once they had dried off, in order to ask Mufasa for permission to go star gazing tonight, Simba relaxed next to his best friend before addressing him in a carefree tone.

”So maybe after we star gaze Kovu, you can sleep over at my den for the night? Do you think that would be alright with your parents?”
