A Sister's Envy

A Sister's Envy

Postby Krypt » May 27th, 2010, 4:23 pm

Here is my first Fan Fic, thought I would try out my creative writing skills...Anyway, this takes place mostly after the unification of the two prides, mainly focusing on Vitani and Kovu. I'll try to post a chapter every few days.

Chapter 1 - A Brother's Promise

"Kovu! How can you expect to carry a fat pridelander princess through a fire, when you cannot even carry Vitani!" Zira roared at Kovu. Kovu had Vitani slung over his back, and was having a difficult time walking even just a few paces. Why did I have to carry her out of the fire anyway, he thought, couldn't I just drag her out? Maybe Simba would get mad if he saw the bite marks from being dragged by the mouth, who knows? Kovu finally managed to carry Vitani to the top of the ridge, out of sight of their mother, and set her down. Actually, it was more like roll her off.

"What, you given up already Kovu?" Vitani smirked.

"You trying carrying yourself, and then ask me that again." Kovu shot back.

"I bet I could. I bet I could carry you to Pride Rock and back." she retorted.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah!"

"Let's see you do it then!" Kovu growled, and lunged at her. He landed on her back, but she rolled him off, and turned around to try and tackle him. Kovu quickly regained his footing, and was able to match Vitani's stance. Now it was a face off, each waiting for the other to make a move. Finally, Vitani lunged, and plowed right into Kovu. Kovu, who had been waiting for this, allowed himself to be pushed over, and used Vitani's remaining momentum to flip her back over, so he was on top. At last, he pinned her to the ground.

"Ha! I win again!" Kovu smirked.

"Don't rub it in. It isn't like you win every time." Vitani said, still on the ground.

Kovu finally let her up, and walked a few paces away, looking off to the west. The sun was beginning to set, creating an ominous blood red tinge to the sky. Vitani joined him.

"This looks like how the sky was yesterday." Kovu said.

"Duh! This is how the sky looks every day!" Vitani replied with a smirk.

"Yeah well, not in the Pridelands. When I am king, I am going to be looking at a nice blue sky. Not a stupid dead red one." Kovu replied.

"So...when your king, what would that make me?" Vitani asked. The question had been on her mind a while, but she didn't want to ask it around Zira.

"Duh, you can be queen. It's not like I am going to have someone from the Pridelands be the queen. That would be disgusting! It would be perfect, besides, your my sister, I know you won't screw up. At least, not too bad." Kovu replied, standing up. It was getting later, and it would be time to be heading back to the colony. Didn't want Zira coming after him.

"I'll try to take that as a compliment." Vitani said sarcastically, but was actually touched that Kovu trusted her like that. Whether he knew it or not, Vitani actually thought a lot of her brother, and his opinion meant a lot to her. Mostly because he was the only one that ever spent time with her.

"Hey, what do you think is for dinner? A nice juicy antelope?" Kovu said, interrupting her thoughts.

"Yeah, or maybe a Zebra!" Vitani said. They could talk about good food all they want, but the truth was they weren't going to get anything close to that. All the game stayed in the Pridelands, off limits to the Outlanders. Who could blame them? Not like there was anything out here to live off of.

"I bet Nuka already caught something delicious for us." Kovu said.

"What, an elephant?"

"No, Termites!" Kovu laughed.

Vitani laughed as well, but not for long. She wasn't looking forward to eating termites again, seeing that she has to eat them at least twice a week so she doesn't starve. Oh well, they were crunchy, yet satisfying sometimes, and they were better than nothing. But only a little better. With that thought, she joined Kovu, and together they walked back to the colony.

Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Contention

It had been three weeks since the unification of the prides. It had been three weeks since the battle of the muddy gorge. It had been three weeks since Zira had died. But for Vitani, it seemed so much longer.

The unification had been rough for her, she not being easy to make acquaintances, others not willing to meet with her. After all, it was well known that she is the daughter of Zira, and was her second in command, so it wasn't all well and good for her, as it might have been for some of the other Outlanders. The direct decendent of their enemy seemed to be a likely target for persecution, and the others seemed to follow the stereotype.

She had been told by Simba this was the place that Scar had often spent his time, and so she decided to look over it. It wasn't that bad, as she might have expected, and since it was situated near Pride Rock, she could see all that happened in the valley. And what she happened to see now was the hunting party returning.

The group of lionesses returned, showing off their kills, Outlander and Pridelander alike. It wasn't like Vitani didn't try to make friends with them, join them, talk to them, but the others seemed bitter to her whenever she approached. One in particular was Nala, who seemed detested whenever she approached. Maybe it had something to do with the night of the battle, maybe she just hated Outlanders, but that's how it was.

The only person she could possibly go to was Kovu, and even he seemed far off. Every day, he was growing closer and closer to that, Kiara. Kiara, that name tasted like vinegar in her mouth. She was the one that kept Kovu from her. Kovu, the only one she could trust, the only one she could ever trust. When he had left for his mission to assassinate SImba in the first place, it was almost unbearable to think that they were going to be seperated. After all, after years of training together, it was strange to see him go. Now that the plan had failed, and the Prides united, Kovu seemed to always be out of her reach.

Her thoughts were growing darker and darker with the fading sunlight. It was Kovu that she had left her mother for, that night of the battle. It was him. He was the reason that she had to watch her mother die. Kovu seemed to disregard that fact. Or maybe it wasn't that he was disregarding it, maybe it was just being covered up by that horrible five letter word: Kiara.

Vitani watched as Kovu finally came back to Pride Rock. Vitani felt the urge to go and talk to him, to let him know how she was feeling, but that was quickly suppressed as she noticed Kiara was with him. Why wouldn't she be? They go everywhere together, just like she and Kovu had. As Kovu passed by, he gave her nothing more than a passing glance, before shifting his full attention back to Kiara, who was standing in the place of Kovu's life that she used to occupy.

Vitani felt trapped, like there was no way out or a miserable, friendless life. Like the life she once knew, cherished, hoped for, was slipping away. At the hands of that lioness, Kiara.

Chapter 3 - Confrontation

Kovu was on the top of the world. Nothing could spoil this moment. He and Kiara had had a wonderful evening together, and now it was finally winding down with a night gazing at the stars. As they pointed out many shapes and features of the night sky, Kovu heard someone approaching from behind. Looking back, he saw Vitani approaching, slowly stalking through the tall grass.

"Kovu. I need to talk to you." Vitani said, after approaching a reasonable distance.

Kovu was surprised to see her, he hadn't seen much of her lately. Then again, it seems like he hasn't seen much of anyone lately, other than Kiara.

"What is it?" Kovu replied, standing up. Kiara was interested too, and turned around to listen. Vitani noticed the gesture.

"I have to ask you something. Alone." Vitani said, glaring at Kiara. Kiara looked a little hurt, but laid back down on the grass. She seemed lonely all of a sudden, now that Kovu was not right next to her.
Vitani led Kovu away, out of earshot of Kiara, and unloaded the pain she had been feeling for practically a month.

"Kovu, how can you stand to be with, with, with that all day!" Vitani sneered, gesturing towards Kiara, "What happened to the lion I changed for, what happened to the Kovu I grew up with?"

Kovu, taken aback, replied "Vitani...I guess all I can say is that I changed my priorities. Maybe you should too."

Vitani, angered by this remark, growled "Your priorities? Does that mean I am on the bottom of your list now? What about Nuka? Did you forget about him? Is that where you place on the people you want to forget about, at the bottom of you priority list?"

Kovu, realized he didn't really use good word choice, replied "Look, all I am saying is that I am trying to change. Get a new life. One that doesn't involve training and fighting and killing all day. And that requires...change."

"I see that Kovu. I was just hoping that the relationship between us would not change. Looks like I was wrong." Vitani responded with the final word, before stalking off into the chill of the dark savannah night.

This seems intreseting. Continue please
Sometimes I simply sit down and write because I cannot help it. Who knows, perhaps one day something will come out of it. Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel I should be doing something else.

Interesting start, and an interesting look into Kovu's life in the Outlands.

You've got some good skills, there, keep it up!

For your first fanfic, it's not too bad at all. You've definitely got some literary talent, that's for sure. Keep on writing and I'm sure you'll get even better. The storyline seems interesting enough and hasn't, to the best of my knowledge, been done much here, so you at least have a bit of novelty on your side. One small suggestion: the universally-accepted way of spelling 'ya' is actually 'yeah'... once again, not a big deal, but it is something that probably does need to be changed, especially in terms of professionalism.

That's all I've got. See you next chapter!

Next Chapter is up, though this one is a bit more wordy with less dialogue, so it's a little harder to read. Thanks for the feedback, I'll take it into account.

Well, this is a different outlook on Vitani to what I usually see...and that's a good thing! :)

The original take on Vitani has left me interested to see where this story goes, but I'm struggling to predict where it's going to go. The fic title's helping, though ;)

Aside from a few minor spelling and grammar errors, which we all make, I can see no flaw in the story so far, but then again I was so engrossed in the world I wasn't really looking (I'm a terrible critic :P ).

Keep it up, I'm liking this!

Solid chapter. I do recommend, however, staying on top of spelling and of keeping your tenses the same. (In other words, make sure it's all past-tense with the narrator; sometimes it shifted to present tense.) Keep an eye on your sentences as well; sometimes you add too many phrases and separate them with commas, the end result being that there's a lot of choppy and/or run-on sentences.

But from all other accounts, things are looking good. The idea of Vitani being, you know, incredibly envious of Kovu is intriguing, to say the least. Not to say it's never been done before, but it's certainly not done often.

Keep it up!
