Kovu’s Age

This may have already been a topic of discussion previously, but I was thinking about the Outlanders while writing a bit of a story the other day and remembered the fact that Kovu and the Outland youth’s ages seems to be pretty skewed in the TLK timeline.

Let’s take Kovu for instance:

Zira mentions that Kovu was chosen by Scar to be his successor. This means that Kovu was born before Scar was killed. However, between TLK and SP we have had enough time pass for the destruction within the Pride Lands by the hyenas and the fire to be nonexistent, all the vegetation has regrown, and let us also not forget the fact that there had to be time for Nala to become pregnant and have Kiara. (I’m also NOT going on the fact that people say the cub in the end of TLK is a different cub than in SP because we have no evidence of that in the movies — that would give even more of a time gap.)

So, this means, wouldn’t Kovu have been much more of a grown cub by the time Kiara was old enough to run off on her own? Yet when Kovu and Kiara meet, they appear to be the same age and the same size.

I’m happy to just let it go to serve the story, but the little incongruities are fun to chuckle at.

This definitely has been an issue of conflict here on the forums, mainly in regards to this thread here.

There's contradicting evidence in TLK2SP that points to Kovu being around when Scar was still alive, yet in appearance, Kovu does look to be the same age as Kiara when they first bump into each other, so it's hard to say for sure. ^^

I think when Scar chose Kovu to be his successor, he couldn't have meant Kovu himself because of the amount of time needed for Kiara to be concieved, born, and slightly grown after Scar's death (provided that the theories that Scar didn't die are false). And as you said, Kovu and Kiara seem to be the same age when they first meet.

I think this question is just another one of the flaws that were made in TLK2:SP.
It's is said that he was hand chosen by Scar,but then he would have to be older than Kiara,considering how much time has passed since the fire and Kopa's birth and then Kiara's birth.
But then again,maybe it could all get squeezed in this short timeline,since Kovu would have been two generations older than Kiara.Maybe Outlanders do tend to grow a bit slower than Pridelanders...Kovu could be a bit older than Kiara,considering his mane when he met Kiara.

Well, SP ignores the fact that Kopa ever existed. So in the SP universe, the cub at the end of TLK was Kiara, meaning that she was born shortly after Simba became king. A certain ammount of time must have passed between the defeat of Scar and Kiaras birth, considering that the Pride Lands would need some time to grow lush again after Scars reign.

So since Kovu was probably a baby when Zira and her cubs was banished, he should certainly be bigger than Kiara due to their age difference. Kovu could be smaller than normal due to mal-nutricion, though. (little food)

I would say that Kovu and Kiara are the same age as if Kovu was born before Scar died, Kovu would be a teen when he met Kiara. Scar probably just told Zira that her next male cub would be king and a grief stricken Zira decided to carry out her dead mates wishes.

That could actually make sense.If you take in consideration that Scar was never given the chance to be king,since he was the younger brother,he maybe didn't want Nuka being the king for the reason to contradict what happened to himself.Then he told Zira that her next male cub should be the king.Since Scar isn't Kovu's actual father,then Zira conceived Kovu after Scar's death,after she mated with some unknown lion.Then Kovu would still be 'hand chosen' and it would explain him and Kiara being almost the same age.

This is a really good explanation, to say the least. It certainly holds water, and seems very plausible.

That's pretty much what I was going to say. When he was "hand-chosen" by Scar, it wasn't Kovu per se, but whoever came next. Kovu just so happened to, you know, come next. And obviously Zira would be more than happy to carry out Scar's wishes. It's a much better explanation than to say that Kovu is older than Kiara... in terms of physical appearance, that just doesn't seem plausible.
