Two newly translated TLK comics!

Two newly translated TLK comics!

Postby Akril » May 4th, 2010, 2:40 am

I found a couple of German TLK comics on http://simbas-pri.de which haven't been translated into English yet. Armed with nothing but a very minimal knowledge of German and Google Translator, I decided to take on the job of translating them for the English-speaking fandom myself.

The first comic's title didn't translate that clearly, but it seemed close to the English expression "On one's own two feet", so I came up with "On His Own Four Paws" as the English translation. (Warning: these files are big!)

01.jpg
Interestingly, this is the second drought mentioned in the comics (bringing the total of droughts in semi-canon media up to four, counting the droughts during Mohatu’s reign and Ahadi’s reign).

I never really understood the summaries at the end of every page. Has ADD become so prevalent that kids these days need a recap after reading just 6-8 panels?

02.jpg
I know very little German, but the dialogue in that last panel made me think that Simba was saying something like "Get your stinkin’ paws off me, you d**n dirty ape!" Surprisingly, I wasn’t that far off!

And check out those giraffes. Now THERE’S an unusual species.

03.jpg
Back to the drought subject for a moment: in the comic "Dry Season", the drought was caused by some evil gorillas creating a dam to block off the river...and there’s a mean gorilla in this comic too! Coincidence?

This comic also unintentionally provides a reason why Simba beat up that huge brown gorilla in the Hakuna Matata level of the TLK video game: REVENGE! >:)

04.jpg
Hmm, riding a log over a giant waterfall? Aagh, I’m flashing back to the Hakuna Matata level again!

Translating these comics is also a bit educational for me. For instance, the German word for bats is "Fledermäuse", which seems to almost literally translate to "flying mice" (well, "mäuse" means mice, anyway, and "fleder" is almost like the verb "fliegen", which "fly" translates to).

05.jpg
One word on this page that Google Translator couldn’t find and I had to look up elsewhere was "Pitschenass", meaning "soaked to the skin". German really is a fun language.

I guess Simba was getting pretty delirious in that sixth panel.

06.jpg
It’s interesting how the jungle in this comic ("Dschungel" in German) is referred to as the jungle. Not a jungle, but THE jungle. That’s strange, since the only jungle mentioned the movies is Timon and Pumbaa’s home...

And I guess returning to the Pride Lands across the desert wasn’t too difficult for Simba as an adult, since he already performed a similar feat when he was only a cub! :)

There is rarely any mother-son interaction between Simba and Sarabi in canon and semi-canon material, and the one in this comic is a real "awww" moment.

I've given this comic a more permanent home here, in case the images in this thread stop working sometime in the future.

I'll be back to post the second comic soon!

This comic, "A Great Team", has been posted in Koraden's excellent TLK comic collection for some time, but it was still in German. This comic was a bit trickier to translate than the previous one, but I gave it my best shot.

This comic features a little rhino (the second one that has appeared in the comics so far, I think) and an incredibly cute zebra foal. There's also a young crocodile, and I should mention right now that he says a naughty word in one of the panels. I'm not sure if it's too dirty for this forum or not, but if a mod wants to replace the embedded image with a link to it, that's okay with me.

At first, I thought this was going to be one of those "bratty child gets a taste of his own medicine and learns his lesson" stories, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't.

Though Rhino is called "Rhino" in the original German version, Crocodile is called "Kroko" (which translates to "crocodile") and Zebra is called "Zeb". I still called Zeb "Zebra" since the other two animals lack proper names.

team02.jpg
I had trouble translating the dialog in the first two panels, so I ended up changing it a bit. As you can see on this page, Simba is indeed a very sharp-minded young feline.

team03.jpg
Again, sorry about Crocodile's foul mouth, but that line was exactly what I got when I entered "Oh Mist!" into Google Translator, and I didn't feel like bowdlerizing this comic.

team04.jpg
Either Simba forgot what happened the last time he went to the border of the Pride Lands or he forgot about this incident before Scar told him about the Elephant Graveyard...or maybe this comic just doesn't fit in with TLK's continuity all that well.

I love the hyenas' threats here. That's some pretty morbid stuff for a kids' comic.

team05.jpg
That's right...Ed talks in this comic.

ED TALKS.

Why The TLK Comics Probably Shouldn't be Counted as Canon, Reason #7.

The footnote at the end obviously makes much more sense in the German version.

In case the embedded images don't work, you can read the comic here.

Hmm, interesting... I have the Finnish version of the comic "On His Own Four Paws", and it says nothing about drought.:hesitant:

The second comic was funny. I think Ed talks in some other comics, too.

Thanks for translating these! :) I enjoyed reading them.

Thanks a lot for translating those comics, Akril!

I love those last panels in the first comic, it’s so rare to see Simba and Sarabi together.

Amazing job on those Akril! :D

About the jungle... I think it's the same jungle Simba ended up in in the movie. I think he wanted to reach that jungle after his ''exile'', but he didn't have enough strength and he fainted just when he was about to enter it. Whoo, yay for new theories!

And yay, the second comic has new characters! Wow, Simba had many cubhood friends XD
And yay, the second comic has new characters! Wow, Simba had many cubhood friends XD
He certainly does! Simba plays with a young rhino and a zebra in another comic, but they look a bit different than the ones in this comic, and I've only seen a tiny scan of the first page here.
