Ari shrugged. "You're probably right; the King would be very unlikely to knowingly let any lions on the hunt. 'It's the lionesses' job,'" she said, emulating Scar's deep accent as best as she could. "I guess I'm just hoping you'll have something to do. I'm sure lounging around gets old after a while... as good as it sounds right now."

They walked along, Ari playfully bumping against Hiroshi from time to time, not that it was too hard to do considering how close the black-maned lion was walking to her. She did not mind, of course. If he was going to be unable to join Ari on the hunt, even just as a spectator, they would have to get as much time in together as possible now.

As they neared the cave where the Hunting Party usually met, Ari was drawn to a familiar figure that was usually nowhere near the party... and her suspicions were confirmed as Hiroshi spoke to her in a low voice, wondering why Kito had turned up that morning. When the duo finally reached the party of lionesses, Kito stalked over to them, straightening his mane as if he had made his own fun already that morning.

Ari was quite set on returning the favor to Kito concerning his initial comments--for instance perhaps a comment on his own appearance after what she took to be an intimate morning with the Hunting Party just moments earlier--but was stopped in her tracks by his final sentence.

"Wait, me? But..."

She was interrupted by Hiroshi's well-wishes and congratulations, and while she felt somewhat prideful about the news, her expression quickly turned back to one of curious shock as she addressed Kito.

"Why me? I've only been part of the hunt for a little while. The other lionesses have way more experience than me. Answer me, Kito, why was I picked. And where's my mother? If anyone, she should be the head huntress, not me."

------

Kweli was quite pleased to find Rafiki already up and about, returning the mandrill's embrace once he had leaped down from his place in the tree. Laughing politely as the old shaman ruffled up his mane, he grasped at Rafiki to repay the favor, but he was too quick, maneuvering out of reach of Kweli's forelegs. Still chuckling, he joined Rafiki on the ground by the tree, stretching out his body as he listened to Rafiki's pleasant salutations.

Kweli's eyes widened excitedly. "Yes, Ari is back! She returned late last evening. Unfortunately, her hunt didn't go exactly as planned, but she was still able to snare a warthog on her second day out. She didn't go outside of the Pride Lands, so she didn't have much luck with anything, but we're glad to have her back, especially Hiro.

He paused before continuing. "As for the rounds, nothing spectacular, as always. Everything's rather desolate here... though I find it interesting that past the borders, everything seems much better. Then again, maybe that's just me longing for better days here. Oh, and I ran into a pack of hyenas coming out of the Elephant Graveyard... looks like they were moving some more of their possessions over into the Pride Lands. Boy, do I hope they'll get expelled soon. But while we've got Scar at the reins, I guess that won't be changing anytime soon."

Glancing over at Rafiki, he gave the shaman a chance to respond before asking his own question, "What about you? How are things in these parts? Anything new from the Kings? I'm very interested to hear about anything if so."

Casually staring off in the opposite direction as Hiroshi congratulated Ari on her newly acquired title with various forms of physical gestures, Kito finished straightening his mane and pelt before turning back to face his two friends. Perking his ears up from the question that was being posed to him by Ari, Kito shook his head as he grinned over to the golden furred lioness, his emerald orbs clearly showing the enjoyment he was getting out of Ari’s predicament. Speaking up in a rushed tone as he knew time was already beginning to tick away, Kito replied to Ari as he thoughtfully stroked a paw under his chin.

”Oh come now Daddy’s Girl, you can’t be that naive can you? It’s clear that he’s doing this to gain favor with you. Believe me, I tried talking him out of it, telling him how you were more clumsy than a new born antelope and twice as weak, but apparently his majesty’s mind is made up. So, if I were you, I’d get your ass in gear and go rally your lionesses. As for your mother, well, his royal highness has other plans for her and Fila today, so everything’s resting upon your very unattractive shoulders Ari. Don’t you worry though, I’ll be there to cheer you up after you fail miserably.”

Tilting his head from what Kito had mentioned, Hiroshi wondered what exactly his best friend had meant by his last statement. As far as he could recall, no males were allowed to accompany the lionesses during any hunts, so unless the rules had been changed, Kito must have been talking about something else that seemed lost upon him. Glancing over at Ari to gauge her reaction to what Kito had stated, Hiroshi couldn’t help but to inquire as he turned his focus back to his best friend. Speaking up in a inquisitive voice, Hiroshi asked politely.

”So, are you just here to inform Ari of this news Kito or is there some other reason why you waited for us to arrive?”

Shaking his head at Hiroshi’s remark, Kito gave his body a thorough shake, causing his mane to flow freely from his movements as he responded in a bored tone.

”Well, if you really must know Hiro, his majesty has instructed me to accompany the lionesses on the hunt today. Apparently he’s sick of them slacking off so he’s entrusted me with the task of keeping them all focused and to ensure that they don’t come back empty pawed.”

==========

Resting his chin upon his hands as he listened to Kweli’s reply, Rafiki seemed to be deep in thought as if trying to process every little detail that was revealed to him, looking for a deeper meaning or perhaps trying to pre-emptively formulate a response in his mind. Hearing the news about Ari, Rafiki’s face seemed to light up with excitement although it was short lived at best as he heard how her hunt had turned out. Closing his eyes and continuing to follow along as Kweli finished telling him about how the patrol had gone, the wise mandrill stayed quiet for a second once Kweli had fallen silent before he chimed in.

”It’s a shame that Miss Ari’s hunt didn’t turn out as well as it might had if these lands were as plentiful as they once were, but at least she returned safely. In uncertain times such as these, simply having our health is enough to be thankful for. As for the hyenas, let’s hope that balance is soon restored, for I fear that if change doesn’t happen soon, I don’t know if the lands will even be able to recover.”

Shifting his position momentarily, Rafiki cocked his head as he heard Kweli’s next inquiry, causing his excited expression to return once again. Instead of answering immediately, Rafiki simply let out a pleased sounding cackle as he darted up the side of the baobab tree, returning shortly after with two hallowed gourds in his possession. Placing one gourd at Kweli’s paws, the contents of it showing clearly as the mixture of herbs and fruits wafted upwards to greet the senses, Rafiki resumed his place next to the young male, while holding the other hallowed gourd in between his palms. Unlike the previous gourd, the one Rafiki held merely contained a bit of water with a few leaves of some sort floating about upon the surface. Gazing into the shallow pool, the wise mandrill spoke in a thoughtful tone as one of his narrow fingers slowly stirred the mixture held within the makeshift container.

”Funny you should ask that my boy. You see, The Great Kings were very talkative last night. Kept me awake well past my bed time but what they had to say was both reassuring and disheartening at the same time. They mentioned that eventually, all wrongs would be set right, but in its wake, new problems would arise.” Moving the gourd in front of Kweli’s face now, Rafiki continued speaking as he motioned towards the surface of the still water being held within the container. ”You see how still the water is Kweli? It’s at peace, much like our lands once were.” With this stated, Rafiki gingerly dipped a finger into the water, breaking the calm surface and causing ripples to form over and through the once still liquid. ”Now look, even the most peaceful scenes can be so easily disturbed, but watch.” After a moment or two, the water returned to its former self, still and calm once more. ”You see, things always have a way of returning back to normal. That is the way nature intended it to be.” Lowering the gourd from Kweli’s face now, Rafiki glanced over at his company and inquired in a curious voice. ”Do you understand what I’m saying my boy?”

Ari continued to stare at Kito in disbelief, at first unable to comprehend what had occurred. Even so, if Scar wanted them to actually succeed, he would place a much more able-bodied lioness at the helm of the Hunting Party, would he not? Regardless of whether he wanted to get in good favor with Ari--and it sure was not going to work in this regard--his main priority should have been putting the best lioness in charge.

"Well, you can let the King know that it's not working, and if we fail today it will be no fault but his own for letting his own personal feelings getting in the way of keeping the rest of us alive."

Kito's last comment seemed to interest Ari as much as it had interested Hiroshi. "And what do you mean, comfort me? Why on earth would I need comforting from you? I fully intend on making this a successful hunt anyway, so you won't need to worry about that."

She glanced over at Hiroshi as her friend asked the same thing that she herself had also been wondering. Furrowing her features as Kito announced what Scar had instructed Kito to do, before softening a bit, she spoke up in a somewhat hopeful voice, though she kept her rough demeanor toward Kito, hoping it might sway him one way.

"Well then Kit, if one lion will be accompanying us on the hunt, why not add another for some more dead weight? I know Hiro has nothing to do today and he could help keep us in check... who knows, maybe you two will actually be able to catch up a bit since you don't seem to need to talk to us commoners anymore due to your position as royal ass-kisser to the King. Only kidding, of course! But what do you say?' she gave him a small grin. "Mind if he tags along? I'll make it up to you someday; we both will."

------

Nodding along as Rafiki gave thanks for Ari's return and his opinions on the health of the Pride Lands, Kweli was somewhat surprised when upon his next inquiry, the mandrill leaped into his tree, disappearing for a moment before returning with two gourds. Taking the one offered to him by Rafiki, Kweli was rather delighted to find a variety of herbs and fruits inside, and he took it graciously with a word of thanks.

As Kweli chewed politely, the shaman had taken to his own gourd, which continued a small amount of water and a few leaves. Kweli glanced over curiously, wondering what Rafiki was doing exactly, before his questions were answered when Rafiki began to speak once more, recounting his experiences with the Great Kings he had had the night before.

He was thankful for what Rafiki had told him and understood what he meant, though the lion could not help but feel as if the mandrill had perhaps withheld a great deal of information. Unsure of whether or not Rafiki would tell him later, Kweli spoke up in a curious voice.

"I understand, Rafiki. Though in my humble opinion, this time around it's like you stuck an entire paw into the water and shook it around for a while rather than dipped in a toe. Things will get back to normal, I'm sure, but at what cost? And at whose expense? One could easily say that the lands will get back to normal, but that could happen with or without us, couldn't it? I mean, Scar's reign could tear this place apart even more than it already has, and we could either all die or flee to another more suitable location, and the lands would still eventually get back to normal, right?"

He paused. "I guess what I'm asking is this: is there any more that the Kings have told you about the future? Sure, I believe when you say that things will get back to normal, but... do you mean that in regards to these lands or to us? Or to both, perhaps? I think what I'd love to know is whether or not staying here with Scar leading us is a viable option that we should take."

Looking extremely annoyed from what Ari was asking of him, knowing that if Scar caught wind of him allowing another male to tag along with The Hunting Party, he’d be in a lot of hot water, Kito was reluctant to give in at first. Staring into Ari’s eyes and seeing Hiroshi’s pleading gaze as well, Kito sighed dejectedly as he debated internally over the matter, finally caving as he adopted a cheeky looking grin. Taking a few steps forward so that he was almost face to face with Ari, Kito lifted a fore paw and lightly caressed it over one of Ari’s cheeks before stating in a coy voice.

”Oh, is that so Ari? And how exactly do you intend on doing that, hmm? Well, I suppose I could make an exception but just realize how much I’m putting my own ass on the line just so you and your fuzzy love can be together. Just keep your mind on the hunt and off of his…”

”Okay Kito, we get it.” Hiroshi interrupted before the last words left Kito’s muzzle. Turning to Ari, Hiroshi addressed the golden furred lioness in a gentle tone. ”Go in and get the lionesses ready Ari.”

Giving Hiroshi another soft nuzzle, Hiroshi took a seat as he waited for the gorgeous lioness to rally the rest of the Pride. Feeling a bit more relieved that he wouldn’t be spending the day alone, having to wait for Ari’s return, Hiroshi thought about how the day would plan out. Knowing that they would probably have to cover a bit of distance just in order to find any suitable prey, Hiroshi prepared himself as he gave his body a quick stretch before turning to face Kito, waiting to see what would happen next.

Tapping his fore paw upon the dry ground in an impatient manner, Kito huffed as he waited for Ari to prepare the other lionesses for the days hunt. Being rather clueless to the whole hunting business although he’d never let on about this fact, Kito expected Ari to pick out a select few of the pride’s lionesses to accompany them on the hunt. Figuring that Ari would at least take the majority of the responsibility over how things would pan out, Kito hoped that the day would go smoothly and more importantly, he wouldn’t have to do much of anything, other than making his presence known and keeping everyone in line, which was something he truly looked forward to, especially if it came to Ari.

==========

Listening thoughtfully to what Kweli was saying, Rafiki casually set down the gourde he was holding, next to him before lightly stroking his hand over his chin. There were in fact, many details that he had left out in regards to what The Great Kings had told him, although the wise mandrill himself still was hard at work unraveling the mysteries that lay within their spoken words. Knowing that Kweli wouldn’t be satisfied without a pertinent answer though, Rafiki spoke up after a moment of silence, his voice sounding a bit apprehensive as he stated quietly.

”Old Rafiki should have known that you were too clever to accept a simple answer my boy. Well, you see, The Great Kings don’t like to simplify their answers. Everything they say is always wrapped up in a riddle or it’s very vague. You see, the best answers are those you find on your own Kweli. From what I gather though, Taka’s reign is going to come to an end soon. How this comes about, I’m still unsure of but if I figure out more details, you will be the first to know.”

Pondering over Kweli’s remark about leaving the lands, Rafiki’s expression melted into that of sadness as he once more, picked up the gourd filled with water and lightly tipped it over, spilling the contents of the container upon the parched ground below. Watching as the moisture was hurriedly absorbed by the dying lands, running a finger over the spot where the water had once been, Rafiki spoke up to his company in a longing voice as he gently cupped a hand full of the dry dirt, letting it slip through his fingers as it returned to whence it came.

”My ties to this land are rooted too deeply for me to just up and leave Kwelie. I’ve served under King Ahadi, King Mufasa and now King Taka. I couldn’t just abandon these lands, especially when I’m needed the most. These lands will be purged of all the wrong doings but not without much pain and suffering. As a Shaman and under the vow I took many generations ago, I cannot forsake my destiny, nor can I run from it. Facing your troubles head on is the best way to resolve them. It may not be the easiest way, nor the quickest but in order to repay these lands, that have given up so much for me, as well as the rest of the creatures that reside here, you and your friends included, we must stand strong and remain united against those who wish to tear us down.”

Kito walked a few steps toward Ari so that he was quite close to her frame, but the lioness did not back off, instead staring directly into his gaze, hoping this would convince him to allow Hiroshi's presence on the hunt, if she met him eye to eye. She was somewhat taken aback when her friend caressed a paw against her cheek, her heart jumping slightly at his surprisingly light touch, but she held her ground.

He began to affirm Hiroshi's ability to come on the hunt with them, though not before getting in a bit of a blow relating to Ari and Hiroshi's unspoken friendly relations. She opened her muzzle in protest, but was cut off by Hiroshi's own protests, which she thanked the Kings for in private.

"Thanks a lot, Kito. Seriously, we'll make it up somehow. I promise."

Giving a prolonged nudge to Hiroshi and a quick nod to Kito, she rushed off to rouse the lionesses, something she was quite scared of doing but knew was unavoidable, especially if she was to keep Scar off her back at least for the time being. She cleared her throat as she approached the lionesses, whom she knew well after having grown up with her mother.

"...hey. So, um... look, I'm sorry about this whole head huntress thing," she said, eyes downcast. "I didn't ask for this. Apparently Scar thinks it'll make me like him more or... something. Anyway, I know this is probably an exercise in futility, since we're probably not gonna catch anything but... who knows, maybe we'll get lucky." She nodded to five of the lionesses nearby. "You five have been in the party the longest. You're the best we have. So you five can come with me. The rest of you, enjoy the time off and be glad you don't have to be with Kito. If there's anyone who knows less about hunting than our lovely King, it's him." She turned back to the five lionesses, who were readying themselves. "Let's try to put on the best show that we can so that even if we can't catch anything, Kito won't be able to complain too much about us to His Majesty."

Ari motioned for the lionesses to follow her and returned to where Kito and Hiroshi were waiting. "We're ready to go," she said. "Anything else we should know before heading off? Or did Scar not plan that far ahead and just want us to go out and find what we can?"

------

Kweli listened intently to Rafiki's response, knowing full well that he more than likely would not receive a complete answer. That said, he still liked to try to get out of Rafiki as much as he could without sounding too overbearing. He was truly interested in the affairs of their land, and any information he could bring back to his friends, to help sooth them or to warn them or anything of that nature, was much appreciated.

"Thanks Rafiki, and I'm sorry if I didn't seem content with your answer; I am. I'm just so curious to know more sometimes. I want to help the lands as best as I can and I know that one of the best outlets possible for that is through you."

He sat and listened to the rest of Rafiki's comments and could not help but feel a bit of sadness himself for the mandrill. Still, he much agreed with his declarations, nodding along fervently as he spoke.

"I do agree with you; I think the best way is to meet our problems head on and I know that leaving wouldn't really be a viable option anyway, as nice as it sounds sometimes. As long as the lands themselves will get better, it's calming. I just tend to try to avoid conflict. Pacifist through and through." he glanced down at his paws. "Couldn't actually hurt someone even if I wanted to anyway."

He glanced up at the shaman. "Rafiki..." he started, "I have a question, and I don't know if you can answer it and that's why I never asked before, but... it's about Ari and Hiroshi. I suppose I'm just curious... where do you see the relations between those two going? I would've thought that if they were going to admit some sort of love for each other they'd've have done it by now. I don't know if you're any bit of a seer or if all of your knowledge comes from the Kings, but do you know anything about this? Do you know what the future holds for them and for the rest of us?"

Both Kito and Hiroshi rose to their paws and moved aside as the five chosen lionesses, headed up by Ari, came padding out of the den. Both males seemed to have the same idea as they scanned over the chosen members of the pride, but for obviously different reasons. Hiroshi’s intentions were innocent enough as he simply wanted to see who Ari had selected to join her on the hunt. By the looks of things, she had made quite a wise decision as all the members she had appointed, seemed fit and in as good as shape as any member could be during these hard times. Kito on the other paw, was merely looking for an outlet for his own selfish whims as he gave a pronounced whistle before falling in line behind the band of lionesses before speaking up in a commanding voice.

”Alright, listen up lionesses and lion, and whatever Ari is. Today, failure is not an option. His royal highness has ordered that we not return until we, erm, you all, have made a decent kill that will suffice the pride, but more importantly, his majesty. As far as the actual hunt goes, Ari will be your leader. You are to respect and obey her orders. When it comes to everything else today however, my word is final. I would hate to have to give a negative report back to his royal highness in regards to anyone’s behavior today, so let’s all do as we’re told and no one will get in trouble. Now then, how about you lovely ladies, aside from Ari of course, move those sexy behinds of yours and let’s get this show on the road.”

Covering a paw over his face in utter embarrassment from what Kito was saying, Hiroshi felt almost humiliated to be friends with him at this moment from the way he acted. Kito had always been a bit self-centered but this just seemed to be over the top, even for him. Trying his best to ignore this fact however and just being satisfied with the fact that he would at least be able to spend some more quality time with Ari, Hiroshi began to make his way towards the front of the group where Ari was positioned, only to be stopped in mid stride by Kito who blocked his path and spoke up in a condescending voice.

”Um, afraid you’re going to have to bring up the rear Hiro. Can’t have Ari being distracted by your presence now can I? I did say I’d let you tag along but you know as well as I do that if her head is up in the clouds, dreaming about whatever you two do in your spare time together, we’re never going to succeed today. So, back of the line with you.”

Flashing Kito an irritated stare as he so badly wanted to speak up in defense, Hiroshi held his tongue as he merely nodded and fell back behind the small group of lionesses. Pleased with himself by this point, Kito took up a spot next to Ari as the band of felines set out into the desolate grasslands. Keeping his pace timed with Ari’s and upholding his proud appearance, Kito spoke in a nonchalant voice as he noticed Ari’s facial expression, which clearly showed that she wasn’t very happy with his former decision to say the least.

”Don’t give me that look Daddy’s Girl. You know damn well that I did the right thing. If I let Hiro walk with you, you two would do nothing but fawn over each other until we all died of starvation or sickness from having to see that. Just think of it this way. The sooner you and your pride sisters bring down a worthy kill, the sooner Hiro can get you alone and jump your rump.”

==========

”Real strength comes from here my boy.” Rafiki stated, giving Kweli’s head a light tap with his hand from hearing the young male’s doubts.

Reclining once more against the trunk of the baobab tree, Rafiki helped himself to some of the left over food that Kweli had left in the gourd that had been put in front of him previously, taking a small amount of the herbal mixture and chewing upon it thoughtfully as he listened to his company’s next quandary. Unable to resist a lighthearted chuckle, Rafiki casually wrapped an arm around Kweli’s neck, drawing him in a bit closer as he responded to his inquiry in an amused tone.

”Oh Kweli, you surely jest this old soul, do you not? Do you think if old Rafiki knew that much about love and how it worked, that you’d see this lonely old baboon in front of you? No, if I knew the ways of love, I would have unlocked the greatest mystery of life you know. Not even the wisest of scholars can field that question to which you seek answers to. Love works in many strange ways and it cannot be rushed. Everything has its time and place though and if love is meant to be, it will always find a way my boy. There is no explanation that I can give you, that will help much but every now and then, love does need a bit of a gentle push in the right direction. Something tells me though that you already are well aware of this Kweli, for you wouldn’t have asked for my advice on the matter if you didn’t have good intentions in the first place.”

Releasing Kweli from his friendly embrace but not before giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder, Rafiki gathered up the two discarded gourds as he nimbly made his way back up into the seclusion of his tree top home. Setting the empty gourds down and retrieving his scrying bowl, the agile mandrill returned a few moments later, taking up his former position as he sat cross-legged upon the ground, the scrying bowl held in his lap as he glanced over at Kweli in a quizzical fashion before asking in a polite voice.

”Would you care to meditate with me Kweli? It can truly do wonders for a restless soul.”

Re: [Private] Love Will Tear Us Apart

Postby YFWE » March 11th, 2010, 8:51 pm

Ari rolled her eyes at Kito's attempt to define his control over the Hunting Party, especially since she was fully aware that he know little to nothing about hunting itself. She inwardly resolved to perhaps test his patience later on; even if she rose against him a time or two, surely he would not say anything to Scar. After all, above all, they were still friends, right?

She could see Hiroshi approaching her from out of the corner of her eye and was glad for at least that, that until they found something--if they found something--she would have her friend to speak to. So of course, she was more than frustrated when Kito cut him off, advising him to go to the back of the group so that he would not be a "distraction." Her mind began to protest the logic behind this, however, when Kito went against his own advice and fell into line directly beside Ari as she led the lionesses across the savanna.

Sending him a rather scalding stare, Ari felt her blood boiling with each word Kito spoke. It took every bit of her to restrain herself from cuffing the lion across the cheek, instead taking a deep breath to compose herself before replying.

"Jump my rump, eh? I'll have you know that we have never done such a thing, though I wish I could say the same for you. Those poor lionesses. I can only hope you haven't taken a liking to your mother yet, though. I have to say, Kito, even by your standards that would be a little gross. But to each his own, I suppose."

Glancing back toward the deserted plains ahead of her, another thought sprang into her mind, and she turned back to him. "Oh, and another thing. Thank you oh-so-much for keeping Hiroshi back in the back so that I wouldn't be distracted by the two of us talking, but if you would kindly follow your own advice to him and stop distracting me, that would be just great. I'm sure Scar wouldn't appreciate it if we were unable to catch anything because your fat ass keeps talking to me or any of the other lionesses. So hush it and let me do my job that you have so graciously bestowed upon me, and you go do yours, whatever it is."

And on those words she sped up slightly, leaving Kito behind her. She was now quite determined to find something, determined enough that going past the boundaries of the Pride Lands seemed like a viable option. The sooner she removed herself from Kito's presence, the better.

------

Kweli looked down, disappointed, for two reasons. He was somewhat abashed for even asking the question about love in the first place, though he was also downhearted for Rafiki being unable to give him at least an opinion on the matter. He had expected this to be the answer, but it still had not stopped him from at least trying. It was a question that had bothered him often lately, not that it necessarily directly concerned him.

Still, Rafiki's final remark did give him a bit of hope. Kweli had been hoping that perhaps there was a way he could help expedite the process, at least indirectly. And now, though he had no idea how to do it, he at least knew that perhaps giving a little push in the right direction would not hurt.

"Thanks, Rafiki, and sorry for asking. I just want to see both of them happy... even though they already seem rather happy as is. I just know they could be happier if they really were finally together mind, body and soul, and we need all the happiness we can get in these times, I think."

Kweli watched as Rafiki let go of him lightly, gathered the two gourds and retreated to his tree for a moment, before returning moments later with what Kweli recognized to be the shaman's scrying bowl. Fielding Rafiki's question, Kweli glanced curiously at him for a moment, having never actually meditated before in his life, but, knowing he still had some time before he needed to report his findings back to Scar, nodded gently. "Sure... just tell me what I need to do..."

Curling his nose in disgust from what Ari had hinted at in regards to his own mother, Kito looked slightly offended as his ears flattened from the golden furred lionesses next response. Watching Ari speed up as she distanced herself from where he was, Kito couldn’t let her get the final word in edge wise as he called back over to her in a mocking voice.

”Fine! The view’s much better from back there anyways Daddy’s Girl!”

Turning about face, Kito marched to the back of the group and took up a position next to Hiroshi as he continued to follow the band of lionesses as they traveled further along. Having his ego injured in such a fashion by Ari, prompted Kito to seek out some form of retribution as his mind worked to think up some way to get Ari back.

Seeing that Ari was finished speaking with Kito, one of the five lionesses timidly caught up to Ari. Her name was Samira but most of the pride just called her Sam. She looked to be about a season or two older than Ari but wasn’t quite as steadily built as Ari herself was. She was a very easy going lioness though and seemed to have genuinely accepted the fact that Ari was the new hunting mistress, even though she had been so accustom to Fila’s leadership. Despite this fact however, Samira approached cautiously as she addressed Ari in a pleasant voice.

”Sorry to bother you Hun but do you have a specific hunting plan in mind? I’m afraid we’re so used to Fila’s orders that having a new leader is sort of confusing to us. I’m not trying to overstep my bounds but if you could please enlighten me on what the plan of action is, that would be mighty helpful.”

After a bit of thought and planning, Kito finally struck an idea that would surely ruffle Ari’s fur. Looking over the selected members of the group, noticing that Samira was now conversing with Ari about something or other, Kito spotted a familiar face within the remaining lionesses in front of him. Grinning mischievously to himself, Kito waited till his voice would clearly be heard before he called out in a bold voice.

”Lulu, sweet cheeks, bring that sexy tail of yours over here for a minute.”

Perking up her ears, another one of the chosen lionesses branched off from the group as she made her way over to where Kito was. Lulu had a well known reputation within the pride for sleeping around and it was clear from the look she was giving Kito, that the two had already been well acquainted with one another. Being the type to always please and even though she was a lot older than Kito was, it seemed that Kito’s position as Scar’s second in command attracted her to him. Smiling innocently, Lulu spoke up in as sweet of a voice as she could muster.

”Yes Kit-Kat?”

Coughing slightly from her using his pet name that she had given to him a few night’s back, Kito smirked as he glanced over to make sure that Ari was paying attention. Motioning a fore paw towards Hiroshi, Kito replied in a nonchalant tone as he introduced her to Hiroshi.

”I want you to meet my best friend Hiro.” Kito stated, motioning towards Hiroshi as he resumed speaking. ”You know, he’s single and could really use a mate right now.”

Looking quite pleased in the fact that Kweli was willing to give meditation a shot, Rafiki casually set the scrying bowl down in between himself and the young male. Disappearing back into the upper reaches of the baobab tree, the skillful mandrill returned moments later, carrying several different items within his arms. Setting everything down upon the ground in front of him, Rafiki went about the task of mixing up a very pleasant smelling concoction within the scrying bowl, adding what looked to be some sweetly fragrant liquid as well as various herb mixtures. Stirring the contents with one hand to infuse everything together, filling the air around them with a heavenly aroma that almost seemed to soothe the soul instantly, Rafiki spoke up in a calm tone to Kweli as he once again, took up his typical cross-legged position upon the ground, Folding his hands within his lap as his eyes closed.

”The key to meditation is to let your mind be free Kweli. This means to let go of all thoughts that might be floating around in your head. Try and focus upon one peaceful thought in particular. Make sure it’s as pleasant of a memory as possible, as this will help you to relax as well. Breathe deeply and take in the scent that surrounds you now. It just might awaken your inner being.”

Taking a deep breath as if to exemplify his previous instructions, Rafiki fell quiet as his gaze shifted towards the sky above, his eyes still remaining closed as his own mind slowly began to shut off from the real world. Feeling completely relaxed as his state of meditation increased and being a lot more adjusted to this form of relaxation, Rafiki seemed almost idle as he sat there, the slow rising and falling of his chest being the only apparent sign that he hadn’t all but perished from where he now sat.

Breathing a sigh of relief as Kito finally left her side, Ari regained her focus on the task ahead. She had been on enough hunts with the rest of the Hunting Party to know the basic gist of what they had to accomplish, but this time things were much different. Instead of being ordered to do something, she would be the one giving the orders. And especially without her mother there to guide her, Ari could not not help but feel a bit ill-prepared.

She was roused from this critical thinking by a friendly, but inquisitive voice behind her. She cocked her head to find Samira, a lioness slightly older than her but not by too much, asking for directions out of curiosity and for ease of work once the hunt came to fruition. Pleased that the lioness seemed to be okay with Ari's sudden promotion over someone such as herself that had been hunting for much longer, she formulated a response into her head and, giving a nervous smile, turned somewhat to Samira as she continued to walk.

"Hey, Sami. Sorry about all this. Yeah, I think I have somewhat of a plan. We'll--"

She paused, her attention suddenly being diverted to Kito's voice as he called for another one of the lionesses, Lulu, who had had her eye on the lion, it seemed, since he had come to be in his position of power. Rolling her eyes and giving a slight chuckle at Lulu's nickname for her friend, Ari returned her gaze to Samira.

"Sorry. Well, I was thinking that we'd not change much from what Fila does, since that usually seems to work--"

Her focus returned to Kito's voice, as out of the corner of her eye she watched Kito look at Lulu and nod over to Hiroshi.

"...we'll... we'll stay in a group, a... a tight group, altogether, and..."

Lulu was eying Hiroshi with the same expression she gave to Kito, Scar and any other lion she came across. That coy look.

"...and since these lands are a... little... barren..."

The lioness had begun to snake her way around Hiroshi, sizing him up as she went.

Ari let out a sudden roar, one she had not fully intended on performing but one that certainly expressed the emotions she was feeling at that point. "All the lionesses, up here with me," she announced in a loud, somewhat shaking voice, directing this particularly at the back of the group. "Sami has just raised a very important question about our hunt today, and I want you all to hear my answer so there'll be nothing left in reserve. Yes, that means you too, Lulu! Now!"

Glaring back at Kito, Ari resumed speaking once all the lionesses had reached her, concocting the plan that she hoped would bring them some sort of success. She planned on taking them far out past the boundaries of the Pride Lands, to a spot where she was almost certain no rival prides or groups resided but contained at least a few herds. It was not their grounds, but it would have to work, and given the hopeful abundance of meat in that area, it would make it much easier on herself and the other lionesses.

------

As he watched Rafiki disappear back up into the baobab, Kweli wondered fleetingly about what he had gotten himself into. He had heard only brief talk of meditation and, while it did not seem like a frightening concept, it was one that seemed almost too lofty to Kweli, something that he would be unable to pull off, especially on his first day of trying. But as Rafiki had once told him, "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." And the shaman was right. If he was to become even somewhat knowledgeable of the art of meditation, he would have to start somewhere.

Rafiki returned with more herbs and bowls, mixing around a new substance in his scrying bowl, a substance that had an extremely pleasant aroma and seemed to qualm Kweli's reservations about trying this new method of relaxation almost instantly. Breathing in the sweet-smelling air, Kweli found his mind at ease, even emitting a soft purr as he listened to Rafiki's instructions.

"Free your mind... right... no problem..." Kweli purred as he closed his eyes, letting calm feelings wash over him. Though at first he felt rooted to where he sat, still in his previous, meaningless existence, Kweli slowly felt himself being... well, it felt like he was being lifted off the ground. Daring not to open his eyes and thus break his concentration, Kweli continued to allow himself deeper and deeper into meditation. And as he began to leave their plane of existence, delving into a realm that he was of course quite unfamiliar with, visions began to form before him... visions that, while confusing at first, began to develop greater meaning as time wore on, until he finally understood. Kweli knew what had to be done.

His gaze fell on one image in particular, and his mind snapped out of focus, and moments later he found himself on his back, panting, looking up at the blue sky over the savanna. He took a deep breath, wondering if what he had seen had been some elaborate daydream or... perhaps something more. He knew that Rafiki would be able to shed some light upon this, but for the time being he had to catch his breath, still in curious shock from what he had witnessed.

Looking a little perplexed as she tried her best to follow Ari’s instructions, Samira found herself having to piece Ari’s words together from the constant breaks within her dialog. The more she listened, the more she started to hesitate if Ari was actually capable of taking charge of the hunt, as it seemed as though she was being distracted by something, a crucial mistake that every lioness knew to avoid whenever it came to any sort of hunt, even during the planning stages. Jumping back slightly from Ari’s sudden outburst, Samira quickly fell in line as Kito’s words from earlier still hung fresh in her mind. Showing the utmost respect to Ari, Samira waited to hear what Ari had to say to everyone as her ears perked up intently.

While all this was going on, Lulu had already set her sights upon Hiroshi. Assuming that Kito was telling her the truth and never being the type to let an opportunity for a bit of fun to pass her by, the older looking lioness began to examine Hiroshi from head to tail, her eyes drifting from his jet black mane down to his toned hind quarters. Giving a nod of approval to Kito, Lulu was just about to introduce herself to the bewildered male in front of her, until Ari’s booming roar shattered across the barren plains around them. Hearing her leader’s command, Lulu looked a bit disgruntled as she flashed Hiroshi a sweet smile before turning to make her way back to where the rest of the lionesses were now gathered, her tail flicking both males over their muzzles as she departed. Unlike Samira, Lulu wasn’t quite as accepting to the fact that Ari, a lioness much younger than herself and even more less experienced to the hunt, was now her superior. Adopting a sarcastic expression as she listened to Ari’s plan, Samira huffed as she muttered under her breath.

”Tell us something we don’t already know Amateur.”

Letting out a sigh of relief as he watched Lulu depart, having no interest in her whatsoever and being blissfully unaware of the lionesses colorful history as he often kept more to himself more than anything these days, Hiroshi turned his focus over to Kito as he glared suspiciously at his best friend. Having no clue why Kito had done what he just did and already feeling as though he were near the end of his rope, Hiroshi had to all but restrain himself from clubbing Kito with a fore paw as he spoke up in a low but clearly irritated voice.

”Okay, what the hell was that about Kit? Has all that power truly gone to your head or what? I’m not looking for a mate, especially one chosen by you. I seriously don’t know what’s gotten into you today but knock it off already. You’re giving me a headache.”

Grinning with satisfaction from the way he had managed to get under Ari’s skin once again, Kito’s ears swiveled to hear what Hiroshi was telling him. Shaking his head in a disappointed fashion, Kito playfully cuffed Hiroshi across his muzzle as he stated in a playful tone.

”Oh chill Hiro, it was just a joke. You’re working yourself up for nothing, relax before you pop a vein or something. There’s no way you’d even have the nerve to get with Lulu anyways and even if you did, she’d just be disappointed in the end. Might as well keep saving yourself for Ari, cause at the rate your going buddy, she’s going to be the only tail you’ll be lucky to get.”

Not looking the least bit amused by Kito’s statement, Hiroshi moved away from his best friend before he did something he would probably regret later on. He hadn’t been kidding in the fact that it did seem as though Kito’s words were truly giving him a headache as his head did bother him slightly. Reaching a fore paw up to his face and rubbing the spot where Kito had lightly struck him, Hiroshi noticed that he seemed a bit warmer to the touch than usual. Simply chalking this fact up to the mid day sun that was already beating down upon the traveling group, Hiroshi paid it no mind as he continued to follow the band of lionesses while avoiding Kito’s company for the time being.

==========

Minutes ticked by as both lion and mandrill stayed rooted in their meditation, the only audible sounds being the quiet purrs from Kweli and the faint breathing from both parties. Lost in his own little peaceful world, Rafiki was unaware of what was going on around him, as was always the case whenever he managed to find time to enjoy such a relaxing ritual. Reaching his point of Zen in a matter of minutes, the wise Shaman remained silent as he let his spirit run freely as it wished, savoring the tranquility and euphoria that often came with every meditation session. Realizing that he was with company however and assuming that perhaps Kweli wouldn’t be quite as fortunate on his first attempt at meditating, Rafiki slowly came back to life it seemed as his eyes slowly opened and his mindset gradually returned. Glancing over at Kweli now, Rafiki noticed him lying on his back, staring up at the sky with a familiar looking expression, one the wise mandrill knew all too well. Leaning in a bit closer to where Kweli was lounging, Rafiki spoke up in awe as he lightly tapped the young male’s shoulder to grab his attention.

”Call me an old fool my boy, but it looks as though you’ve had an epiphany of some sort? I knew you were sharp Kweli but I didn’t expect you to have that powerful of a mind, or at least, not yet anyways, as young as you are after all. Am I reading you right here, or perhaps I’m losing my touch after all these seasons.”
