The inability of most people to admit they've been jerks and just apologising instead of acting like manchildren with their inflated egos is astounding. The older I get the more I notice this.

It's not actually personal though, it's usually a reflection of their own life and emotions at that time. I found that the rude customers actually were already in a bad mood before they even got in the shop because life had been treating them pretty rough lately or they're just having a bad day.
Granted it doesn't excuse them taking it out on the people in the shop just doing their job but it should also help if retail workers also understand that it's not personal and that customer is really just projecting his or her own crap onto someone else.
I guess that's why I don't really get many complaints or rude people in my own business. People going on holiday tend to be less stressed and have the other areas of life in check when they are looking for accommodation. You can pretty much say what you want other than directly insulting them, it's pretty great
