I've been learning to drive for almost a year now (my dad is my instructor so it's a much more relaxed routine than normal), and I'd say to go for it. It's not anywhere near as bad as it seems, I promise. You should actually consider yourself lucky if you're learning to drive in an automatic like most of the States do, it is so much simpler than learning to drive a manual. I was an overcautious driver to start with and that feeling burns off very quickly. You just have to have faith in yourself and your instructor.
One piece of advice is not to rush the process. So many people my age learn to drive far too quickly. They often use 'natural talent' as an excuse, but they always end up being the over competitive drivers. Just do it at a pace that suits you so that when you're ready to drive by yourself, you're as confident as you can possibly be.

Speaking of driving, I haven't been out to drive in ages

Although, I'll be driving everyday to my training with my dad, and possibly driving back, too...that'll be more than enough practice.
