Unpopular opinion time, or at least for Scotland--I've never been a big fan of the importance placed on alcohol, especially for my generation, who probably started drinking way too young and are now under the impression that you can't have a good time without it. It's disgusting. I was drinking when I was about 13, and if I didn't have the experiences that I did I bet I'd be like everyone else too. Constantly talking about drinking, constantly getting drunk, constantly making a fool of themselves. I hate what being drunk does to people. I've been too acquainted with the negative effects to actually enjoy being drunk. A couple of drinks is fine, but being absolutely p***ed is not fine every single weekend. I get it, you work hard, you deserve a break, but that is not a break.
Not only is it seriously detrimental to your health (not that anyone cares lmao) it really messes you up mentally too. My mother drinks every single night and is in bed by seven. I hardly see her awake. I've watched a boy I used to call my best friend turn into a total embarrassment because he's now obsessed with drinking. And I mean obsessed. We were out at lunch the other day (surprised he didn't order a drink with it) and he talked about his drunk shenanigans the whole time. Like yeah, it is funny, but it's also completely humiliating. Do you not do anything else with your life? Anything at all? What a bore.
I've already told myself that if I eventually decide to adopt kids or my partner has them, I'm going teetotal. There's no way in hell I'm giving my child the experiences I went through with drunk parents. No siree. Alcohol really bothers me quite a lot.
