My YouTube recommendations section looks about like this:

Carl Poppa, ponies, Walking Dead, Rhett and Link, random Disney song(/s).

Eeyup, YT knows me.

Damn, it's almost 7 AM. There's just over 13 hours before it's zombie time. I should probably sleep or something. :simbahuh:

Something has to be done about this post haste. I can't sleep and my dog can't afford to get anemic again.

lelizwe wrote:I agree with all of what you said in your first paragraph. I HAVE to create the visuals for a character before I can even start to plan their personality. Obviously things will differ in the long process it takes to reach final version. I have an OC who I've been developing since 2010. And even now, I sometimes wonder if he is truly complete.

But with your middle paragraph I'm a little confused - are you referring to the backstory when you talk about a 'plot'? To me, those are two different things. The backstory is what makes the character who they are up until the point that the plot, the ongoing story (say, in their own novel) begins. I suppose if you're not writing a novel with them then their only fixed plot would be the backstory, but I don't regard them as being the same thing at all.

The backstory should always give some indication to how it shaped the character, and in my opinion should be the thing you spend the most time on when you create an OC. Not the universe, not the themes of the fiction, just the bear bones of the OC. After all, people's history is generally what makes them what they are.

The ongoing plotline is there to develop the character into something more...or less, depending on what sort of hardship they go through. That's the magic of a good plotline!

But I agree with your point overall. People make OCs in different ways. Whatever suits you as a creator :dreamy:

Killjoy Dixon wrote:^ Well, the character's backstory is still part of the character, and obviously things that happen further in the plot will further develop the character, but if the characters aren't strong, people won't be interested. I think what lelizwe is getting at is that a phenomenal plot with weak characters will be tough to get through and lose people's interest, while you can use a less original plot and still keep people hooked if your characters are awesome enough.

OHHHH, I get it! I'm sorry, I confused "Backstory" and "plot".

You see, I actually don't create OCs for novels. Most of the time, I create OCs with fixated backstories only. I think that that was why I got confused...I'm the "classic Furry", you know? The kind of OCs I was talking about were the ones often seen on the Furry fandom. My bad. :chuckle:

Yet, I do know people who create OCs (for novels and such), their backstory and their plot simultaneously, then connect it all on the end, so that it makes sense. They take ages to "complete" an OC , due to this, though. :? Like I said, everyone has their way of working. But, I do get your point! In a way, the "less original plot, but awesome characters" is a description of pretty much every movie and TV show now. :P
