Plus, I already live the day-to-day life of an 18/19 year-old anyway, so I see no reason to really celebrate it. :ha: It literally doesn't mark anything. My 17th honestly was more important and I didn't do anything for that either. xD

Long story short: there's plenty of people out there who just don't do things for their birthdays. No need to feel self-conscious. You should never have to feel compelled to spend money on something fancy you don't want. :P

Ah, thank you so much for the reassurance. I didn't expect anyone to answer this lol but I really do appreciate it <3 I left high school in 2014 (I suppose it was technically a graduation since you can leave any time after you turn 16 in my country, although I didn't really intend to leave so early) so I'm not in a school environment which naturally means I have fewer friends than people my age who are still at school. I think I'm forgetting that it's custom for people at school to have a party for their birthday, most likely because of the pressure from others there. It's also a lot different this year because this is the first birthday I've had without having a major friend group of 8 or more people. It was a totally different scenario last year when I had my group, now I only have about 4 close friends which wouldn't really be a party more than a few people gathered in a room  Or maybe that's me. Plus, not all the friends know each other.

The legal drinking age is 18 over here (although I'm not going to lie, I've been doing it since I was about 14 so it's not that special) and I will still celebrate the joy of being able to be served in public, but I don't feel the need to make it some kind of HUGE deal. I don't like alcohol that much. I think it's just become a tradition in Scotland to celebrate so largely. I also think I may be creating my own false pressure from my family and friends (I feel like they're expecting me to do something), but it's only because it's so normal of an 18th to be celebrated with something like this. My older cousin had a big party for her 18th, but she's a lot more popular than I am. A lot of people I used to know at school are having big parties. I guess I'm just a little self-conscious because I don't really have anyone other than my family to truly celebrate it with in a big group. It's a change for me, and I'm still not really used to being as lonesome as I am these days.

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. I kinda needed to get this off my chest :cutenala:

I'm so sorry to hear about the wedding being called off, Tsuki. I really hope you're okay. And as other people have been saying, it will happen one day. You have to have faith :)

I have never understood the draw of parties. Can't figure out why people would rather do that than sit at home reading or something.

---

Why do I keep feeling like it's going to happen again? The people I'm close to now aren't like those two were... are they?

Maybe I'm just the kind of person who is better off keeping some amount of distance.

I love a good party, as long as I'm not the focus / host and I know a fair few people. I've only had two big parties, for my 11th and 18th birthdays.

Depends on the person, I guess. I personally love parties  even if I only know a couple of people a drink or two in I'm usually loosened up enough to talk to just about anyone.

They are much more fun when it's all people you're friends with, though.

It's kind of funny how, I had school while my siblings didn't (they're on Spring Break), but I got a lot more done than them. :P I like this - doing everything pretty quickly and at decent times instead of procrastinating. I like it a lot. :D I need to do it more often.

Tsuki wrote:Yeh I don't want anything big. I'm happy with a registry office and a BBQ in the garden after. But Gaz is low on moneys at the mo as I am. Plus I'm the only one who seems excited about the idea. When I bring it up at home I'm told to shut up or that I should get a decent job first....and my Nan and Gran just laugh at the idea which I find hurtful. I was excited but no I feel there's no point.

Sorry it just really hit me today and I don't want to sound selfish or bratty. It's just like I'm no longer allowed to be excited about it

My parents had a very small wedding - the only thing they really paid for was the catering and the rings - my mum borrowed her dress from a friend and my grandmother hosted the reception at her house (she used to live in a big-ish house - her house now probably would be too small) and the only guests were immediate family and my parents closest few friends - all in all about 20 people max. My aunt's friend (a freelance photographer) took a few photos as a gesture and my uncle filmed a few bits and pieces here and there. And my parents friend's father owns a classic car, which he was happy enough to lend them for the arrival/departure.

I've only been to one wedding ever, which I guess would be counted as "big" - I was bridesmaid and honestly it was a whole lot of fuss all around. The video of my parents getting married seems like it would have been much more pleasant. So in that regard, I don't get why people are so judgemental when people say they just want something small.

Damn, that does sound really hurtful :( try to ignore them, Hun. In the end, the day should be about the two of you, and what any one else thinks shouldn't matter <3
