Most of the re spinoffs are of mediocre quality. The first four mainline games (re0-3) are adventure games with a horror backdrop and are good. Re4 is more of an action game though a really damned good one. RE5 is okay I guess. Avoid resident evil 6.

The fourth game is awesome. It isn't scary but the combat is great and the dialogue is hilarious. Maybe the funniest game i've ever played.

The thing that makes the combat great is that there are many different viable ways to handle any given situation. You aren't stuck doing what the game wants or expects, almost any weapon combination can get you through the game.
