Yep, that's true. I kind of think of both, to be honest. :kionoops:

I guess it's different for people who can do the things they want to.

Yeah, I agree on that. People's perspectives depend on the context of their lives, if I'm making myself understandable.

Oh, so that's what this is about? Cool! Yay, something to talk about! :D

Yeah, I get it. The universe is a big, scary, complicated place and we really know nothing about everything. Not even the very foundations of reason can hold up because reason itself is an artificial concept made by man. Logic changes based on the system parameters, and the parameters we think we know are all determined by the universe we observe. They aren't any actual truths to anything.

A couple years ago, I used to think that mathematics was the only universal truth, but since I've come to realize how flawed that is. (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2*a*b + b^2 in cases using real numbers, and we treat that as a universal truth. But there could easily be some definition of a or b such that the above isn't true--we would just have to jump outside our comfort zone of numbers. If, for example, we define a as an imaginary quantity that, when added to any number, the sum equals 1 and when multiplied by any number equals 10, then (a+b)^2 is 1, and a^2 + 2*a*b + b^2 = 10 + 10 + b^2 = 20 + b^2. The only reason why we can't do this in math class is because we have rules in place that say "no such number can exist." Which, when you think about it, only demonstrates a lack of imagination.

So really, when it all comes right down to it, we're all as clueless as could possibly be. What's real, what isn't, what we think is true, what isn't, yesterday and tomorrow and up and sideways are all things that seem so real to us but we have actually no grasp of.

But I've always thought about our own insignificance in the grand scheme of things to be something comforting. Since everything is so complicated and so wishy-washy, does anything really matter? Some people say yes--most people say yes. Usually I think it does, but I'm not always so sure. It's human nature to think that we're all so important, but in reality we don't know what we are. The reason why I've always found this comforting is because all the bad things suddenly become not so bad anymore. But it also does mean that the greatest things aren't so great, so... well...

That... probably isn't too helpful. Sorry. :(

Maybe reading through this thread on nihilism may be a little more helpful. That seems to be the sort of thing you're describing.

Sounds good to me. I'll live on Netflix and in Final Fantasy until then. :P
