That's pretty much the way I am with my relatives, and in some cases, my immediate family too. I live with one of my cousins and we've been pretty close since I was 14 years old, but that's ultimately where it ends. Since I moved out, I see my parents once every month or two, on average, and my grandparents no more than twice a year. I see my sister no more often than that, but we keep in contact a little more since she's not afraid to use the internet.
I have a large number of relatives on my Dad's side of the family, but most of them I haven't even seen once in my life. I've never met my Dad's parents, and I've only seen two of his sisters when he has seven other siblings. I think one of them moved to Germany or something. I don't really know.
Not only this, but around the time that I was born, my mom's sister was working at a hospital and caught stealing prescription drugs from her patients. To avoid legal action, she lied and said that her dad (my grandpa) molested her when she was younger. So... basically, if you can't tell, there are some crazy people on that side of the family. I never see them and never talk to them. I prefer not to be around them.
I would say that my family ties really aren't that strong. Neither of my parents are really all that close with their families, and at this point in my life, I'm set up to be following the same path. I'm essentially my own person.
