It is sad that Nuka died. I think if he had a better relationship with his mother and if Zira wasn't demented and revengeful, perhaps Nuka wouldn't have felt such self loathing and hatred. He may have had an actual relationship with Kovu and Vitani instead of despising the fact that Kovu was his mother's favourite for being the ''choosen one'' and Vitani..for just being Zira's daughter.
It seems as though Zira despised Nuka for being ''weak'' and for not living up to the expectations to destroy Simba. In a way, Simba's words to Kovu about Scar echoes through my mind: ''Scar couldn't let go of his hate and in the end it destroyed him'' sort of reflects Nuka.
To please his mother and prove his hatred of Simba (and I would say Kovu too), Nuka died.

But I agree
it's sad that Nuka died trying to prove to his mom that he could take down simba. And I think he did have a good relationship with his mother but when kovu came into the picture Zira pushed him away....and nuka died trying to win back her love
