Matkiau is the brother of Zentina. For history of prides origin, please visit her page.

Matkiau joined a militia group that sought to kill off humans (much to the dismay of his sister and father) as a means of revenge for the destruction of their tribe, and eventually the death of Zentina and Matkiau's mother by a group of human hunters.

On one particular hunt, he came across a traveling, peaceful family of four. Before that moment, he has never considered a human as a developing being that began as a child like his family did as cubs. He also saw himself and his own family in these humans. He did the best he could at communicating with the family they were to hide until he could talk down the rest of the hunting party. Those he had considered to be friends were the first to find him; he tried to talk to them, that these people had young ones and that they weren't dangerous. But they didn't care. They did as they were told, as they were all told and what they all believed. That humans should be wiped out.

The father of the family found him first, badly beaten and broken--left for dead--from rescuing his own enemy. He called his wife to help build a carrier of large leafs and vines that the four of them used to carry him the rest of the way to the village they set out for. He was hastily taken care of, his heroic deeds stretched across the acres to ear from mouth to ear again. They called him a hero; a guardian returned home. But they hadn't known why he was there to begin with.

He remained in the village, even after his wounds were healed, and grew close with the daughter of the family. She reminded him so much of his own sister he grew apart from, and saw this as a way to repent for his wrong doings. On a particular night during his healing, while finally able to walk comfortably, the pain of remaining among the humans while knowing all of the wrong things he had done pained him inside and out. He attempted to leave, but found himself at the hut of the tribe mystic, only to learn that this tribe was in fact a sect of the original lion painters that kept to the old traditions of love and family. During that time, Zentina never knew the whereabouts of her brother and if he was still alive.
