Where I came from (North Carolina) the schools were really crappy and there were few services for people who needed special education (on both ends of the spectrum, too - I get bored by normal classes, but there was nothing they could do for me, and my brother, who is mentally disabled and could never take a normal class, had to go to a different school altogether, where many of the teachers and staff were abusive... my parents had a very hard time there since it's just the two of us). People who were considered 'ahead' in any way skipped grades fairly often, so it wasn't really that weird for me to do it, too. When I moved in 4th grade, though, I found that the schools were far better here in Washington, and there was very rarely any real need for people to skip grades because there were more programs and such. So suddenly I was kinda the odd one out, figuratively speaking, and that's why I graduated ahead of everybody else I knew.
TL;DR Skipped a grade, which nobody does here apparently.
