The tuatara:

This reptile may not look unusual, but it is the only surviving member of the ancient order Sphenodontia, and lives only in New Zealand. It also (and I think this is mid-blowingly cool) has a third "eye" on the top of its head which is used to detect light (couldn't find any good pictures of it, though).
The yapok (or water opossum):

The world's only aquatic marsupial. The females can close their pouch while they are underwater (which is a very good thing if they have any babies in there).
The sungrebe:

Nothing particularly strange about this bird...but my gosh, look at those feet! Did Dr. Seuss design this thing??
