JD the Lap-top Dog

JD the Lap-top Dog

Postby Annie » January 14th, 2010, 5:36 pm

(This is the story of JD, the "Lap-top" Dog. The idea came to be randomly while drawing...not sure what's going to happen yet...but...enjoy part1!)

Ever since Frank adopted him, JD was aware of the Laptop.
At first he was just curious and liked to watch the mouse zigzagging around and that was enough enjoyment to keep him busy all evening, but he'd only recently noticed the keys, now they were something else all together. They had symbols that were slightly worn and JD was determined to find out the meaning.
JD soon realised that when Frank pressed the keys in a certain order, the laptop would beep and flash and this fascinated JD even more.

"Click, click, click...."

"Bleep!"

After the bleep, Frank got up and went out the room "B-R-B" He said aloud. He always said this as he left the room, JD just assumed this was a code or something, something that allowed him to leave the room.

With Frank gone, JD would have a short window of opportunity to investigate. He shuffled over to where the laptop was left on the floor. The light hurt his eyes at first, the room was always dark, which made the light seem even brighter.
He studied the screen, there were long lines of the same symbols that were on the keyboard. JD had already picked up that the large key to the right of the keyboard made the sound happen, but other keys must be pressed first...

...but which ones?
JD decided to just guess and hope to get it right.

"cxzcvyugszexxzcvczsa" He typed and pressed the big key.

"Bleep!"

"What luck!!" Thought JD, wagging his tail.
He saw four symbols appear, but what did they mean?!
Were they on this keyboard? His eyes darted back and forth, from the screen to the keys and back again...

"...found one!"

W.

And other...

T.

There's the next one!

H.

Ah! And the last one!

?.

JD had no idea what they meant, but he was pleased that he'd found them on the keyboard.
He was so engrossed that he hadn't heard Frank coming through the door.

"JD! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?" Shouted Frank.
JD knew he was in trouble now; Frank hated him going too close to the laptop.

Whap! JD received a slap on the backside and was sent to bed. At least going to bed gave him a chance to think about the symbols. JD couldn't sleep, he played the symbols over and over in his head, but he could not make sense of them. Were they some code? Like B-R-B?

"W-T-H? W-T-H? Arg...this is difficult, no wonder humans rule this place, they know the code! All of them!"

After a while, all the questions and symbols and thoughts swirling around in his mind became a blur, he couldn't quite tell if he was in a dream, or still just thinking too hard....

"JD! C'mon boy!" JD woke with a start as he heard his masters call. "Are we going for a walk? Huh? Just a short one though, I have to go into work today" Sighed Frank as he put the laptop on the table.
JD wagged his tail and grabbed his lead from the chair. He stood for a moment, staring at Frank without moving, not even a wag. The motionless moment was short lived as JD spung into action again, twirling in circles and jumping up. He dropped the lead infront of Frank, then picked it up again, but this time dropped it on the mans feet!
"Alright, I'm coming" Frank chuckled.
He clipped the lead to JD's matching red collar. The dog pushed his nose agaisn't the door and glared at it, willing it to be opened. After a few moments, Frank opened the door and JD was off! He was in the most excitable mood today, dispite getting very little sleep.

JD had always wondered why Frank never said anything as he left the house when JD was with him, perhaps the thing that opened the door was afraid of dogs.
JD's mind wasn't like a normal dogs, he was always thinking and his mind was always moving at 100mph! He could never fathom how other dogs could lead such stupid lives, never knowing enything but a few tricks to get food from their masters.
JD only stopped a few times to sniff on the walk, he was in too much of a hurry and only one dogs scent interested him. She was a collie, like himself and she was delightfully nasty. He'd only met her a few times and she'd bitten him right on the nose on their first meeting! He had to have stitches.
Although she was much older than him and had bitten him, he was still intrigued by her. But he couldn't be put off by this female, she couldn't be allowed to distract him from finding out the code and using the laptop successfully.

Anyway, when the laptop was mastered, he could find out her name. Maybe the laptop had her name? Frank seemed to be able to find anything using the code, perhaps she was on there too, perhaps it had his name! Perhaps it was watching him!
No, he couldn't afford to become afraid of the laptop.

The route they took on the morning walk, went past several sign-posts, which JD had never noticed before, he saw some of the code written on one of them. He was sure he'd seen one of the symbols before "T"
That's one of the symbols he'd seen on the screen the night before. He took a mental note of the others "S-T-O-P" Unlike the symbols on the laptop, these had a gray background and were much larger. That probably meant they were important.
Infact, after he'd seen the keys on the laptop and that sign, he kept seeing the symbols everywhere! He tried not to pay too much attention to their shape, he didn't want to lose the memory of "S-T-O-P"
He'd try and learn these new symbols another day.

When they got home, Frank slumped down on the chair infront of the laptop, not even bothering to take him coat and shoes off, like normal. He opened the laptop and pressed the large silver button near the screen. JD had to make a mental note of this as well! Frank used it to make the light come on and the "Start-up" noise happen and JD might have to use this button later.

Frank clicked away at the mouse, though it wasn't a real mouse, JD always liked the look of it's tail that connected to the laptop. He knew not to bite it though, not that it tasted of much, Frank had given him a slap on the backside and sent him to bed when he'd bitten it as a pup. How was he to know anyway? He was just a pup.
Frank stopped clicking for a while and stared at the screen, his eyes flicking back and forth.
"He must be reading the code" Thought JD, as he strained to see.

This time there was a block of symbols. JD saw plenty of "T" and there were a few that looked like "T" like t, F, L and I. They all had straight lines. Suddenly, Frank clicked again and a different image appeared on the screen, with different symbols.
JD was sure he'd seen this image before. Frank liked to watch moving pictures.
"Ian sent me a funny video of a dog! A Dog JD! Like you! Wanna watch?" Frank tilted the screen so JD could see properly. JD had seen the little dogs trapped in the screen before and he always felt sorry for them. They were so small and most of them were scared or fell over or did something stupid.
This one was scared, the vacuum was after it.
"That poor thing" Thought JD as Frank laughted. JD Glared at Frank. That poor dog was terrified!

"Stop it!! Get out of my house demon! You let go of my master!! Stop growling at me! I'll bite you!!" Shouted the dog in the screen. JD had learnt long ago that humans couldn't understand his language, you could only hint to them, by tapping your food bowl or scratching at the door.
He glared at Frank again, who was still laughing.
"That's just like you JD! You don't like the vacuum do you? No, no you don't!"
"No, I don't like the vacuum, it smells funny and growls" Thought JD, still glaring.

Frank looked at his wrist collar, it told him the time, somehow. “Oh! I have to run, or I’ll be late! Now where are my car keys?” He said as he fumbled in his coat pocket “No, they’re in the fruit bowl…” He mumbled to himself, grabbing the keys and shutting the laptop. “Bye-bye JD! You be good! I’ll be back as soon as I can!” He shut the door behind him as he left “BYE!” He shouted through the window as he walked past.

Finally! Frank was gone and JD could get to work.
He trotted over to the window and looked out “The car’s gone” JD wagged his tail, “Car” was his favorite word. He scurried back to the laptop and jumped up on the chair. His first problem was opening the laptop, he didn’t have long thumbs like humans, just stubby little dew claws that were really not very useful at all.
He tried using his nose, but that just pushed it further away, dangerously close to the edge of the table. He didn’t want to use his paws, he’d scratched it once before and had been smacked on the backside and sent to bed.
He sniffed it and tried to think of how to open it.
After a few minuets he wagged his tail, he’d found a small gap! He held the bottom half down with his claws and pushed the top half with his nose. “Good boy!” He thought as he flipped the lid open.
His eyes searched for the large silver button that made the screen light up, he soon found it and touched it gently. He didn’t want to scratch it again and be smacked and sent to bed… again.
Sure enough, the screen lit up and after several different images, the start-up noise came. JDs eyes studied the laptop in wonder, the glow of pride (And the screen) lit up his entire face! He had completed the first step.

JD was at a loss, he had no idea what to do next! It was his own fault really, he was so excited about turning the laptops light on, he’d failed to give Frank enough time to show him what do to next and how to use the symbols.
Maybe the laptop could show him what to do next? He pressed the keys down again and pressed the big key on the right.

“Bleep!”

The sound made him jump a little, he wasn’t expecting a noise on his first try. Something was wrong, the image didn’t change, apart from some symbols that turned from green, to gray and they didn’t even look like the same symbols anymore!! JD knew he’d rushed into this, even more so now that the image wasn’t changing like it usually does after the start-up noise and Frank pressed some keys.
“When Frank comes home, I’ll be sure to watch him even more closely” He thought. He knew he’d have to take lots of mental notes.
Mental notes! That reminded him, he needed to look for “S-T-O-P” on the keyboard. Yes! They were all there. “Could it be possible that these are the only symbols? There’s not that many” He scanned the keyboard again, there were more symbols than he could count, but he’d memorized a lot of human language and even managed to form sentences, so this shouldn’t be too different.

Thanks guys <3

“Even so, it’ll probably be best to wait until Frank comes back” He thought, pressing the silver button again, which made the light turn off. He sat looking at his reflection for a while. He’d learnt that it wasn’t another dog looking back at him, after he’d tried to defend Frank against the angry reflection. He’d knocked the laptop over and he was send to bed…again.
Frank had not hit him this time though, he’d barked very loudly.
“JD, you stupid dog!!! It’s just you!!! Your reflection!”
He didn’t understand at first, but when Frank showed him his reflection, it all became clear.

It was just getting dark when Frank returned, JD was awoken by the sound of the car. He’d fallen asleep under the window again, waiting for Frank to come home. He watched Frank pass the window, his tail wagging furiously! Frank waved and held up a bag “It’s for you!” He said, waving again.
JD rushed to the door and stuck his nose in the bag, sniffing frantically.

“It’s a new bowl! We can’t keep using left over Chinese trays. Look! It has your name on it!!”
The bowl had large symbols “J-D” Neither of these was from the sign, or the screen.
“Look! JD! See? J-D! I got it made especially” Frank said excitedly, waving it in front of the dogs nose, pointing to the symbols as he said them.
“JD? That’s my name. The bowl says my name! I know what two of the symbols mean!” He wagged his tail and sniffed the bowl, giving a lick of acceptance.
“Alright, alright! Calm down, let me get my coat off and I’ll feed you! Are you Hungry? Huh? Hungry?”
JD wagged his tail even harder and jumped up and down “YES!” He barked “Yes!! Yes! I’m hungry!” On second thought “Hungry” was his favourite word.
