The Lion Guard (2015 / 2016)

Is it bad that this is the most interesting tv related thing to me in over 10 years?

I've almost completely stopped watching tv, with only marvel shows and once upon a time that interest me. Before that the last show I really watched was the colbert report... In 2007... Before that I watched some south park here and there...

People talk about game of thrones or true detective, breaking bad or community/always sunny but those shows just don't intrigue me.

But a TV series based on the lion king that isn't a timon and pumbaa focused show? That has a bigger focus on the lions? AND it's canon with the first two movies?

Sure it's disney jr but when it comes to new TLK media I will take what I can get.

I agree with all of this, and I do have to say that bringing back the 2D animation was an excellent choice by Disney. It would be weird seeing a CGI TV show of The Lion King.
It was Disney that stated that Kiara is Kion's older sister. That is a good source. It would not make sense for them to alter the events of existing movies, when all the press that has come out thus far is all but screaming that The Lion Guard takes place after Lion King 2.
I've not seen any definitive statement that it takes place after SP? All the press I have seen is that Kiara will be in it and that is all. It's the most probable but there has been no solid confirmation? Especially since we've seen nothing in regards to Kovu, whose absence would be odd if it took place after SP.

It's not like they announced every single character in the press release. Greg Ellis is playing Mzingo, but was not mention in those at all.

True but it is odd since Kovu is a fairly major character, as major as Kiara at least. I just don't trust it to work logically, I don't know why.

Also has this been posted on the board yet?

That's a little old. There is still hope, as it was only recently confirmed who was voicing rafiki.

It just makes no sense to include kiara, call her the future queen but not include kovu. Who would be the king outside of kovu?

Most of the veteran actors have moved on with their lives. We can only hope that Disney finds good replacements.

By the way, this is the voice actor of kion. Video is a bit old but it does give me some hope.

High paw!

Things that point to Kovu being in it

-The fact that they are even acknowledging the first sequel. How many Disney direct to video sequels are even considered to be canon with the original? They must know that the sequel has a fanbase bigger than other dtv disney stuff.

-they are trying to include as many returning characters as they can.

Either way

-The hyenas will be in it, but it hasn't been confirmed if they are the trio from the first movie or not.

-like posted recently, the original actor for kovu might know who is the new voice for him.

Things that point to 'no'

-Vitani hasn't been mentioned either.

It's the newest that I could find on his twitter, since I was trying to find the (even older) tweet where he said he had not been contacted about TLG but was willing.

And maybe they'll get Vanessa Marshall as Nala? She did Nala in Kingdom Hearts and is currently working on Star Wars Rebels which is Disney. She doesn't sound the part at all though.

I can't imagine that Marsden would be hard to get, though, he's got to be about the same price as Greg Ellis (who I'm somewhat unhappy about being in the show, but maybe he'll actually be able to do a voice that sounds different).

Cam Clarke is fairly widespread as well, and considering he's Simba in Disney Infinity it looks like he's still the go to guy when it isn't Broderick.

As for Vitani and Kiara they're sort of b-list celebrities? Or rather cult celebrities, though I doubt they'll be voiced by the same people.

EDIT: Okay so apparently I need to stop using wikipedia as a source. I still think Clarke will voice him but apparently he's not actually in Infinity.

As compensation take this funny article: http://www.polygon.com/2014/9/13/614222 ... -off-simba

They might even get Ernie Sabella considering he somehow voices EVERY Pumbaa ever. Not Nathan Lane though.

I mean I hope everyone (character-wise) comes back, but it really depends on what the writing staff wants to focus on. If the series is more episodic, as I suspect, I doubt we'll see much of anyone beyond Kion and the Guard.

Although come to think of it, since the show is going to be about protecting the environment, it would make sense that the theory about the hyenas being banished because of overhunting would make them villains for this type of show.

I just thought of something. Simba and Nala are the first Disney parents to not only survive 3 movies, but assuming they survive the TV movie that will be 4 plus a whole TV series.

I'm also fairly sure they were also the first Disney couple to have a baby during their debut movie.
