I think That people that are saying that they want The Lion Guard to be like My Little Pony are hoping that The Lion Guard will match My Little Pony's popularity and ability to attract as well keep an audience that exceeds it's target demographic.
Speaking as an adult that loves The Lion King, I am also cautiously optimistic about The Lion Guard, I was thrilled to hear that there was going to be another follow up to The Lion King. My heart sank when I heard it was to be a preschool show. The realization I reached was this. The Lion Guard will not have the epic majesty of The Lion King, The lessons the show imparts my be somewhat in your face in order to make sure that target audience gets it. However if the show is good there is still great potential that I could enjoy it.
What little animation we have seen has me impressed and if Disney is making such an effort to make the show look good I can't see them phoning it in in terms of writing and story content. An educational show does not have to sacrifice entertainment value to teach something.
I have (admittedly far reaching) hopes that if The Lion Guard is popular enough that it will inspire Disney to do a Theatrical Lion King sequel( Frozen is getting one Lion King should too

). In which Kion's character could be given more depth and we would get to see him and a teen or young adult. Of course they would need to be much more of a plot than that. There is also the possibility that if Lion Guard is a huge success Disney may time freeze Kion and keep him a young cub forever. Never doing anything to advance his character. Both possibilities are a stretch at best. Although as long as there is something new for the world of The Lion King, hoping for even more is at least semi-realistic.
