I blame technology.
Maybe in some cases, technology is the problem, convenient movies and such at our fingertips, but it is not the sole proprietor, nor the primary one. In elementary school for me, a decade or so ago, none of my classmates wanted to read either except one or two. This was before there were computers in every house, before the first flip phone cell phones had become commonplace, before DVRs and widespread internet. This was before kids had Netflix and all the things they have now. There was still TV, video games, and movies, but most kids who wouldn't read favored going outside instead. They preferred spending time with their friends and playing sports. I think the main reason so many people didn't read then and don't read now is simply because they do not want to.
