Well yes it is slow, but thats one of the parts I liked about it. Stanley Kubrick uses that as a tool to purposefully make you uncomfortable. One interpretation of the movie, that I also agree with, is that its about moral philosophy and the changing of man from animal to ubermensch. (Which is nietzschean philosophy)
