Hmm, well my first advice would be to look him in the eyes when you ask him to the dance 0.o yeah I know that's really hard sometimes, but it will probably make him see that your serious. And if he says no, first you could tell him how you feel- not just that you like him, but that you were nervous about asking him to the dance and that you know he hates you. He might see things a little differently once you explain yourself and if he still says no, hey, life goes on! You could find someone else to go with, a guy who doesn't hate ya! You never know...

He wasn't at school today. So I couldn't very well ask him to the dance. 
But I leave for the dance in a few minutes and I know he'll be there.

sounds....similar to what happened to my good buddy and our former friend (don't let that get to you, this is a different situation). sometimes guys give mixed signals. this particular dude would've liked if it weren't for the fact that he knew she liked him, which we thought was stupid.
basically, most guys are annoyed/embaressed when they know you like them. and if you're friends with them, then it makes your friendly relationship so awkward.

Well that dance went well. (Sarcasm) not really.

No offense, but that guy is a complete jerk. I'd advise you keep away from him completely because if he acts like that towards you (Whether he secretly likes you or not), he'll probably treat you like crap in a relationship anyways. If you want his attention though, I'd advise STAYING AWAY FROM HIM FOR LONG PERIOD OF TIME. He'll wonder why you lost interest and come crawling to you like a puppy
