Whooping Out Loud - A Hyena's Story.

everything for you my dear! I'll start when you want me to, and as soon as I have the character describtions of Gethii and Tangela With colours, spots, eventual scars, facial typics etc.

Chapter 3; First Hunt.

At seeing the food, Shenzi stormed towards it, but suddenly Tangela stood angrily before her: "No cub eats before I am done!!" she spoke. Gethii, teach 'em! Gethii came forward to pick up Shenzi away from the eating Tangela. As that happened with a show of submissive behaviour from Gethii's part towards the Matriarch, Shakarri joined in the feeding frenzy. Glares were exchanged, and grunts were heard. And one by one the other adult Hyena's started to pick off their own share of meat. All except for Gethii, who was not only watching the cubs, keeping them from a save distance, but also provided them with some scraps of meat for them. "I am sorry guys, but this is all I could get hold on." Gethii told. And suddenly a loud cry came out of the feasting clanmembers, it was a subordinate Hyena, who did not heed his rank, as Tangela continued to tear off a chunk of the best meat left for her cubs to feed on. As the Matriarch approached the cubs, she nodded to Gethii in a way to thank him for his cub-service, and the male Hyena took off into the direction of the feeding frenzy to see what was left of the meal..

Soon all were fed well, and the calm returned again. "How come Gethii always gets the scraps mom?" Shenzi asked. "He's an omega ranked male dear." Tangela explained to the wondering cub. "But he's our dad, he should have got hold of some better meat, next time I'll go get me some myself!" Banzai said in discontent with his father's part of the meal. "Shut it Banzai. If I let you come close, none of the other Hyena's has anything to chew on anymore!" Tangela winked to him. "You'd be groing fat like hippo's butt!!" Shenzi cracked at the dumbfounded Banzai..

"That's not fair, we males should get the best meat!" Banzai pouted. Slowly evening set over the lands, and the Hyena's tried to get some sleep. Out over the lands, a storm set in. Monsoon came.. The poor cubs panicked at the crashing sounds of thunder heard from outside the den. "Don't worry, you'll be safe inside your den!" Tangela shouted to them. Reassured again, they accepted their fate, and huddled close together, and fell vast asleep.

Next morning, they found Gethii keeping watch at the entrance, it rained like mad. Poor Gethii was soaked, just as the other Hyena's spread around outside. "What's this?" Banzai asked. "Feels yucky!" Shenzi replied, and Ed stuck out his tongue to catch some drops of rain. "Soon the clan will have feast after feast again." Gethii told the cubs. Mass herds spreading out over the area in a matter of weeks, you'll see!’Gethii said.

And so, a few weeks had passed, and now was the time to go out and forage the lands in search of fresh meat. Under the directions of Tangela, Shakarri and her pack once again set out hunting down prey. "These days will be the days of the biggest hunts of the year! Let's kill at will!!" Shakarri shouted out loud. And she took off together with her pack. Tangela however stayed with the cubs and turned to them: "..And we'll be hunting small prey today!" Gethii, Tangela and the cubs went to the marshy area's surrounding the lake..

Soon they'd reached the marsches, "Gethii, I want you to drive to locate some nests, and if you found 'em, mark 'em for us!"
They followed his scent, and suddenly a bird flew up in the air, Tangela lunged toward the panicked bird, and catched her mid-air, bringing it down to the ground for the killing bite. "You three bite those eggs to get to the delicious insides" So they did. Soon Gethii returned back to them, licking the blood from Tangela's muzzle, as a sign of submission to the Matriarch. "Have you fed yourself aswell?" Tangela asked. "Got me some scalies" (lizards) he replied.

It did not took long before a victory cry was heard over the marshes. It were Shakarri and her hunting pack. "Time to go home kids.." Tangela said. "Soon I'll introduce you to your places within the pack at lunch" Tangela continued. And so they went back to the den.

Cool story so far! I love the title and the storyline... it's definitely something different from what we usually see. Keep it up! C:

yeah, it sure is different, since you really write it from the vision of a real hyena, where most people, me included, write from the vision of humans in animal form (in the movie the animals also have human characteristics, such as hate, jealousy, love and stuff)
this story sure has caught my attention, and not only because you are my boyfriend, but also because you amaze me with your writing skills I never knew you were such a great writer.... with your fantasy and insight on wildlife behaviour, this story will sure become one of very high quality!
I'll keep an eye on this topic also to provide myself from illustration inspiration

It may be, but planning your story with key words on a paper will make it easier....and don't worry, I'll be there to provide you with ideas and inspiration....as usual

Chapter 4; Trouble In Paradise:

As both adults and the cubs awaited the arrival of the hunting-pack, they soon were greeted by the smelly scent of strangers in the air..
"Trouble.." Gethii frowned. "A bunch of trespassers!!" Tangela sternly replied. "Cubs, get your hiney's in the den, and don't come out till we return!" the alpha female told them. Both adults then ran into the general direction of trouble..

No sooner did the duo arrive on the scene, as they were welcomed by the stench of blood, and fear for life. Tangela aimed for the first intruder she could bite. Gethii tried hard to keep the rivals off his lovers back. The dispersed fighting broke up, and the friendly Hyena's formed a battlegroup standing side by side rallying around their alpha, snapping at every rival that dared to close in on them.

Soon confusion set in, both rival groups facing off each other, this time it worked, the outnumbered Hyena's had won the day, but not without loss. One member of the hunting-pack was killed.. It was Shakarri's younger brother Akins. The remaining members of the pack approached the still warm bloodied corpse. They sniffed to reassure if it was really one of theirs that had died.. But the brave boy Akins was dead... This angered the pack. "Let's hunt them down!!" For Akins!!" some yelled. "NO!!" Tangela screamed. "We are too weak now, and you guys inflicted wounds upon them aswell." "But they killed my brother!!" Shakarri yelled in anger. "I saw the big one killing poor Akins" Hami added, continuing: "I'll stick with Shakarri! If needed we kill them all one by one!" Irritated Tangela yelled: "Listen to me! For once use your brains! I know that we lost a valuable member of the pack today, but we cannot fight them on their own terms right now!" She said. "There is only one thing we can do: We must expand our numbers, or face exile from these vertile lands! Now I want the wounded go back to the den area to heal. From now on Gethii, Shakarri, Hami , and I will do the hunting, until we hit full strength again." The wounded Hyena's accepted their ordeal, and vowed protecting the cubs they had from any harm. "For the clan!!" "For survival!" "For our future!" they yelled. Even Banzai spoke his mind: "When I'm grown, I'll kill them!!" Whereupon Shenzi added: "When I'm alpha, I'll do everything I can to stop this brutal injustice dead in it's tracks!!" Ed just laughed being excited at it all. Meanwhile, Shakarri, Hami, Gethii, and Tangela set out to mark their disputed territory, and see if they could get some easy pickings for food. "Ok guys.. Stay sharp, and mark every important spot out there!" Tangela spoke as she marked the first bush. "They will know we're not to be messed with, not without a fight!" Shakarri added, being still angry over her brother's loss.

Meanwhile at the den, the loss off blood attracted vultures soaring overhead in the skies above. Soon after a troop of male lions approached the Hyena's. The Hyena's knew that as one team, they had the best survival options at their paws. Still cautious, the lions kept advancing towards the shaken Hyena's. The lions clearly had picked up the scent of blood.. Suddenly the lions attacked, and they pounced on the hapless frontmost Hyena they could lay their claws on. Banzai was stunned of fear, Ed cringed in the back end of the den, and Shenzi didn't dare to watch it all unfolding before their eyes.. It was a massacre in front of their very own den. "These lions are going to kill all of us" Shenzi thought. Banzai wanted to scream, but Shenzi quickly acted, and put her paw over his mouth, whispering: "Hush you fool, if they'll hear you, we're dead for sure.." she spoke softly with teeth clenched. Banzai remained silent cowering in the back of the den besides his brother Ed. "Mother said, we must remain in the den, until they safely return at all cost." Shenzi whispered to her brothers.

Soon the sounds of severe fighting faded, the cubs remained in the den, the smelly scent of death and lions covered the land ever since.
After a long time they heard familiar voices.. Finally the new-formed hunting-pack had returned.. The shocked pack was furious. "My clan, all dead!!" Tangela cried. "The cubs? Where are the cubs?!" Shakarri yelled. "Cubs?? Cubs come out wherever you are!" Gethii screamed. "I cannot believe it, do you guys smell that?? Lions!!" Hami said to the pack. "Our home isn't safe anymore.." Shakarri said. "Banzai. Ed, Shenzi! Get over here now!!" Tangela yelled. The group perched their ears towards the familiar sounds coming out of the den. A sigh of relief was shared by all remaining adults. Tangela approached the cubs. "Don't worry, you're all safe now." She spoke.

"Let's get out of here, I can't stand the stench of lions anymore." Hami said. Shakarri also added her say to the matter, continuing: "Those darn lions won't stay away for long, an entire pride can fill their tummies, from what has been killed here tonight" She growled.
"Gethii, Hami! You two carry a cub each, I'll take care of Shenzi" Tangela ordered. "Sis, please let me take Shenzi. After all I wish to have a living Hyena cub near me for comfort, after all that has happened today.." Shakarri pleaded. "As you wish" Tangela replied.

"Goodbye my dear brothers, and sisters. One day we'll meet again" Tangela softly spoke, shifting her attention to the task ahead of them: "Let's go..."

Chapter 5; A Safe Haven:

The remains of the once mighty Hyena clan headed east, as the sun set over the lands. "Shenzi, I am sorry to bring up bad memories, but please tell me; You were spared by a vicious lion, just because you did not enter his domain right? Tangela asked to the clearly shaken cub. "...Yes" the cub spoke. "I remember it all very vividly.. But yes, I was spared, under the condition of never returning to that lion's land ever again.."

"Perhaps we might stand a better chance over in that territory, then what we've got out here.." Tangela continued: "Lions and Hyena's are mortal enemies, but only when the lands are contested in a force outweighing one another. In the end, someone has to give way. And besides, those lions took away precious lives in the first place."

"What do you plan to do sis?" a surprised Shakarri asked. "Walk up to them lions and beg for territory??" she continued.
"No... We'll take every oppertunity for granted, as long as no lions mettle with out business! After all, all I want for now, is a safe home.." Tangela replied wearily. "Due east! it's our only hope!" she added.

A week has passed, the Hyena's finally stood on the border of the lushy grasslands. They had survived the barren lands working as a team. "What do we know about lions??" Tangela asked her pack. "We've never encountered as much dangerous situations in the heat of the day, as we had to deal with 'em at night.." Shakarri replied. "There's our oppertunity!! We'll hunt at day from now on!" a confident Tangela cheered. "Let's survey the area for a good spot to live at." she continued, as she stepped into the shallow river.

To their amazement they did not directly encounter lions as they probed forward into the new territory. However, they did smell traces of lion scent along the Pride's border. "Mother, I'm scared! These are the lands belonging to my parents assassin..!" Shenzi whimpered.
"Yeah, what if those lions got track of us, and attacked us like those of the last time we encountered them at our former den?" Banzai added; "Wait and watch, as we are turned into lion snacks??" he continued.

"I kinda like that plan of killing off those rivals one by one, it really sounds like an obvious thing to do, for me." Tangela replied to the young Hyena. Banzai was dumbfounded by his mother's reply. Whereupon Shenzi added: "So we finally are going to kill lions?" "yes!!" Tangela said whilst baring her teeth. "An eye for an eye, they may have won the last battle, but this war ain't over yet!" "Sis?? You do know that we're probably outnumbered against any pride of lions right? The four of us cannot risk an all-out attack on them. Besides, we'd be risking the lives of our precious cubs, and with it, gamble the faith of our clan's existance!" Shakarri said. "Don't worry sis, the clan will prevail.. Have faith. Afterall we're Hyena's right?" Tangela reassured her.

"Do you guys heard that??" Hami said. A low toned growl echoed over the grasslands. "Darn! Lions!" Shakarri yelled. "Ok, let's focus everybody, do we have directions where the growling came from?" Tangela asked. "I guess in front of us, somewhere around that pointy rock formation far ahead of us.." Shakarri replied. And another growl echoed over the grasslands. "Clearly that rock!! Ok, let's keep a clear distance away from that rock at all times!" Tangela added. The clan turned southbound in a semi-circle around the lion's rock.

Suddenly they stood face to face with a small troop of lionesses. The Hyena's tensed, they walked around the surprised lionesses, not willing to risk another fight. One of the lionesses spoke up to her sisters; "I can't recall those filthy creatures being around here, since I was a cub!" another lioness added: "I thought we got rid off them, our father told us he'd chased away the last of 'em stinky creatures last spring!" This time the lionesses were clearly more concerned with keeping their meal, then raising the alarm.. The Hyena's were in luck! Soon afterwards the clan encountered a dreary place consisting of sporadic volcanic activity.

"Do you see all those bones around here?" Tangela yelled. "Truly a queen's meal if I may say so!" Shakarri replied to her sister's amazement. Dozens of elephants skulls and bones laid scattered before them. "And best of all, seemingly there are no lions around here!" Gethii confirmed. "Then this will be our new home." Tangela said with a smile on her face.

The next day the adult Hyena's set out to hunt on the borders, of what seemed to be an elephants graveyard. Not long after they returned with the meat for themselves and the cubs. "Cubs, show yourself!" Tangela waited for reply, not long after the trio came out of a huge elephant's skull. "Food!!" Banzai and Shenzi excitingly yelled, Ed giggled in anticipation of the taste of meat aswell. The cubs began licking the adult females their muzzle, and each got a regurgitated meal of Meerkat flesh for breakfast. After feeding of the cubs, the adult males handed over their still untouched share to the higher ranking females, and set out to crush some bones themselves.

A full year had passed, as the Hyena clan steadily grew larger again. New cubs were born, yet the Hyena's kept laying low on the sidelines of excistance. Occassionally they encountered adult lions on the grasslands, but more often then not it remained to be a stalemate situation. The Hyena's rather gave up their prize, then directly taking the fight to the stealing lions, whose dominance over the lands was clear to be seen. The Clan's cub trio had become teenagers themselves, and provided protection and care for the youngest Hyena cubs in the elephant graveyard. But one night...

The adults were probing deeper into the lion's territory.. They'd found a young lion cub. "A lion! Shakarri snapped. "Revenge is ours!" Hami said, as he licked his muzzle. "For the glory of the clan!" Gethii yelled. "Don't touch it!!" Tangela ordered. "If we draw blood now, the lions, will find us for sure!" she added. The Hyena's growled to their Matriarch. After a short dispute it was decided. Tangela wasn't the alpha anymore. Shakarri stepped forward. "From now on I'll take the lead myself! You even failed to let us have our revenge.....? Now where is that lion cub??" The young lion made use of the hassle to escape back to safety again. The Hyena's however continued to search the land for an easy meal..
