Whooping Out Loud - A Hyena's Story.

Chapter 1; A New Life:

The sun was beating hard on the barren lands, and a lone Hyena cub was near collapsing.
"Is this the end? Mother?" The poor cub's paws couldn't handle the weight anymore, and as the cub was breathing it's last breath -- or so it thought, suddenly some shade provided some relief from the harsh sun stinging the hot body of the cub. It was another Hyena..

It was a lone male, it hesitated to kill this cub, eventhough it was weak now, and thus provided an easy meal for a hungry lone hyena like him.
The cub looked up gazing at the male before passing out completely. The male cautiously clenched his teeth around the cub's body, and took her back to the clan's native lands.

Before the den a female Hyena laid down obviously guarding the burrow. The male greeted the higher ranking female which he approached cautiously accompanying his advance with a submissive posture. "Did you bring food for our cubs?" Tangela asked upon recognizing the male as her mate. "No, I could not kill the cub. I will not kill a fellow Hyena for food" the male replied, as he continued: "I found her on the lands bordering the lush green plains to the east boundary of our territory." "So you failed to bring food, and brought us another mouth to feed instead?" Tangela replied irritated at her mate, continueing her sneer: "Listen to me Gethii , you really should go out and hunt in my sister's hunting pack to get access to bigger prey if our cubs are to survive! I order you to do so for the sake of our litter, ánd the clan!!" "But Tangela dear, you know I cannot hunt in packs, you know I cannot stand the pressure of a hunting pack. They always deny me the best parts whenever I try to snatch a strap of meat for our cubs.." Gethii replied.

"Do you challenge my authority Gethii?! If you disobey me like that again, I have you banned from the clan! Then you can wander off all you want at last" Gethii sighed. "Ok, I'll try to hunt together with the pack, but I wish for some socializing lessons from your sister if you are willing to grant me that favour." Tangela nodded stating things could be arranged for Gethii's acceptance by the hunting-pack.

Then Tangela turned her attention to the clearly shivering Hyena cub. I think it is for the best to have a girl within our midst, as an potential heir for the future of our clan she thought to herself. "So.. What is your name young one?" Tangela asked. At first the cub did not dared to answer, but Tangela broke the silence asking for the cub's name again. "Don't worry, I will not bite to kill you, you may prove to be usefull to our clan's excistance. But I do want to know your name little girl.."

"Shenzi" the cub replied clearly being relieved of the subsiding of immediate danger.. "Shenzi eh? So.. Now that you'll finally talk to me, tell me what you were doing outthere?" And Shenzi started to cry remembering her parents to be killed by a lion king known by the name Ahadi.
"My parents returned with a fresh kill, and as we ate, a big lion tried to steal our meal" Shenzi said, continuing her story; "My parents charged head-on towards the lion, but my father was bitten and beaten hard. I saw him fall to the ground, then the lion tried to go for his neck. Mommy bumped into the lion being enraged as I haven't ever seen her like before. It scared me to recall those angry eyes of my mother." Tangela listened being shaken by the cub's story. "Poor girl.. But atleast you escaped!" "Suddenly the lion came up to me after mauling my parents, and leaving them for dead, and I thought my last hour finally had come.." "You may be a child, but for now I am convinced that I only need to kill off the intruders of our lands" Ahadi stated. "I grant you to live Hyena, but promise me one thing: Run! Run, and never return!" Shenzi nodded and set out for the barren lands to the west. Shenzi continued for several days with little rest, far away from the blood stained youth, crying all the time over the grief loss of her parents. It was then one hot afternoon that she could run nomore, and that day Gethii found her.

Suddenly Tangela called her own cubs out; "Banzai, Ed? Come out to meet your new sister!" Two black/greyish cubs came out of the den laughing in sheer excitement of the new situation presented to them. "What do we have here?" Banzai ask tauntingly, and Ed just laughed causing some fright to come over Shenzi. "I-I am Shenzi" Shenzi quickly replied to even the odds. "I say we've got us a trespasser! Banzai sternly said. Shenzi looked to Tangela, and Tangela took action correcting Banzai's aggressive stance: "This trespasser is your sister from now on Banzai, no Hyena cub should be left to fend for themselves when a clan can help it! It is our duty to maintain the sure survival of our species together, and you too have to accept that dear. You know the law, and you'll have to obey!" After hearing this Banzai quickly backed down under the massive persuating power of reason his mother used on him. "Besides, our clan needs another female to become a potential Matriarch incase my sister would die..." Tangela added.

The three cubs went back into the den again, Ed started to nibble on an old bone, and Banzai recalled being still hungry, and Shenzi laid down on the other side away from the two brothers, who were now her new siblings to be. Once again Tangela proceeded keeping watch outside.

good story sweetheart.....it's fun to see how you use the quotes from the movie
maybe Scar will get that "run, and never return" from his father XD
you sure have some story-writing skills and you are absolutely taking high advantage of the English language, which has way more opportunities in expression than the Dutch language.

I also really like the way you describe the feelings, poses and relations between the characters, it's really like the wild (having a dominant female and the way lower-in-line hyenas act towards a higher-in-range hyena) That makes it even more realistic. I also like the fact that you took Swahili names for the characters that fit with the personality of the characters. Very interesting!

It are not Swahilli names to be specific.. In this case, Gethii is an Kikuyu name (meaning Wanderer) originating from Kenya to be precise, and Tangela is an African-American name (meaning Care-Taker). And thanks for the kind reply. Glad you'd liked it so far.

A very intriguing start to what I'm sure will turn out to be a wonderful Fan Fic Thani. ^^ You have a very solid writing style that's enjoyable to read and it's nice to have a few stories that follow the lesser characters of the TLK universe and how they came to be. Looking forward to reading more as you post it, as well as learning more about your characters too. ^^ Keep up the fantastic work.

Chapter 2;Moving Out.

The next morning, whilst the three cubs were still sleeping, a soft cry awoke Shenzi. She looked around, and shaked her head, shedding off the sleepy feeling out of her body. Shenzi walked towards the den's entrance. It was Gethii, Shenzi walked towards the male Hyena, greeting him, whereupon Gethii asked her "Well well, you're up early this morning? How do ya feel?" "Fine... But there is one thing I don't understand... Why did you saved me last afternoon?" Shenzi said. "Oh? Don't you underestimate this Hyena dear. I may look fiersome, but Tangela knows my heart is at the right place.Thee hee, heh! I guess I made you pass out because of my looks right?" Gethii grinned. "Neh, not really.. I just couldn't go on anymore.. But thanks for saving my butt!" Shenzi said. "You got to thank Tangela for the acceptance little girl." Gethii replied.

Quietly Tangela came standing besides them, she called out her two other young, and Banzai and Ed came out of the den a little later.
"Today you three will follow Gethii to your new den.." Tangela spoke. "But why?" Shenzi asked. "This den is quite nice for me, and I guess it's the same for Banzai 'n Ed aswell, right guys?" "Yeah" Banzai replied, and Ed nodded fervently. "I tell you why" Tangela said. "If you three aren't moved to another den in time, you three will be stuck butt-out in the entrance. I'd say quite an easy meal for a Cheetah!" Tangela grinned. "Now unless you want to see that happen, follow us to the new den, and stay alert!" And without further questioning the cubs followed.

The cubs were amazed by the beauty of the lands. "Gethii!" Tangela spoke as they neared the new location.. "Announce the cubs arrival to the pack, and let them setup a hunt for the cubs. Go!" And Gethii ran off. "Ok you three, listen up, and listen good!" Tangela spoke. "Today you're going to meet the other members of our clan, and I want you to know a few things, before we continue.." The cubs sat down in a semi-circle around their mother. "Always stay close to me, and I'll make sure nobody goes wild on ya" "B-but what can they do? We're just cubs, right?" Shenzi asked. "They mean it playfull, and show some interest in you guys, and I want you to keep walking between my legs for your own safety." Tangela said to Shenzi. "Why?" Shenzi asked. "The clan was there when Banzai and Ed were born, but you.. You're new to them kid!" Some might not immediatly accept you as a clanmember, and they need to be kept at a safe distance from you.." "Yeah but you are their leader right?" Shenzi asked frowning. "Could be, but they need to know their place once again." Tangela spoke, continuing: "Once they know you're under my protection, things will settle down soon enough. Now do as I say, and no harm will come over you. Once in the den, you're safe again."

And thus the four proceeded heading towards the clan due north-east again. As they came over the last hill, they were greeted by a lake, whereafter the new den was positioned. "Wow, a lake!! Finally some refreshment oppertunity!" Banzai yelled. "Stay with me Banzai!" as Tangela reminded the cub on his position in the little group. "You may enter the lake another day, when it's safe, under the watchfull eye of Gethii, do you understand?." "Yes mom.." Banzai replied clearly being dissapointed. As the group approached the den, some whooping sounds came to their ears, and not shortly after, a few Hyena's rallied around Tangela and the cubs. It was Tangela's sister Shakarri, surrounded by her fellow clan members of the hunting-pack. "Glad you'd make it sis! I see you finally brought the last born cubs with you." Shakarri smiled. "How did the hunt go Sha?" Tangela asked. "Guess what? We brought down an old Wildebeast for supper!" Shakarri gleefully grinned, with a big smile on her face. "

Another nice chapter, once you edited the names at the "spoken" sentences
I like the way you make Tangela describe the behaviour of her clan members towards the newcomer Shenzi. It's pretty much the way hyena's would act in nature.
I also like the part where Banzai discovers the river and is reminded to stay close to the little group, it's really what a cub would do, impulsively wandering off :p
Keep up this nice story, and you'll sure get more fans of your writings besides me

Oh my, that would be so cool to see once the first few chapters are finished. But first I wish to give you a better insiders-view on how the characters evolve over time.. But great to see your willingness to illustrate to this story. I am sure it will look beautiful as always, and I hope it will give you plenty of inspiration aswell.
