A guest had a fall outside the hotel early this morning and was taken to hosptal with a broken hip. His worried daughter called a few hours later to make sure we could look after his belongings and car. As the daughter wasn't able to travel down straight away, I said that if her dad needed any of his belongings I would take them to the hospital. A while later she called back to take me up on my offer and asked if I could take his bag and laptop in to him, but was concerned that I was having to put myself out. I said it would be my pleasure and she said that if there were more people like me, the world would be a better place and that she'd be writing to head office to tell them.
After work I took a trip down the DGH and was taken to meet the guy, who shook my hand and told me I was a "top bloke" and was so grateful that I had gone out of my way. Walking home, I was thinking that it's a sad reflection on humanity today that what I did (which was just making a small detour in my day) was considered so amazing. We should all do things to help those who need it, even if they are a stranger. It could just as easilly be someone we love in that position.
