If you're using Photoshop, you would go to the Image tab, scroll to Adjustments, it then will give you a list of setting to change. Your options should have Auto Levels, Auto Colour, and Auto Contrast, up to the top of that list. If your scan was set default colour and contrast; 0. And the paper you started with was white, pick Auto Levels. Then you should be good to go. It's what I do with mine.
