[Sorry, skipping ahead to landing]

Rhinnëa leaned forward, disguising her wish to move away from Eyulf as interest in the landscape beyond her. "The end of Du Weldvarden is just ahead. We ought to be landing in only an hour or two. It ought to be sunset by then and then it'll be another day or day and a half till Carvahall." She gave the boys behind her a tight, forced smile over her shoulder.

The hour stretched to nearly two, before Gweir and Lyrea coasted to the ground. Zaq and Eyulf dismounted and stretched, while Rhinnëa unsaddled Gweir. After a moment, she stalked over a few yards and began to unpack her bedding. A shadow cast her in darkness, more darkness than there should've been, even in the waning light. As she anticipating, Eyulf was standing there. When she failed to look up, he knelt, a frown puckering his face.

"You're mad at me."

"No. I'm not." She unrolled her bedroll with a savage snap.

He raised his eyebrows apprehensively. "So I can snuggled up with you tonight?" He grinned as she looked up, obviously alarmed. "I'm kidding, calm down."

Zaq lingered by Gweir, who waited patiently for Lyrea to be freed. When Rivera seemed to be unoccupied, Zaq gripped her arm and gestured away from the others, "We can talk over here."

Rivera bit her lip, but allowed Zaq to lead her away. They walked about 50 years away from the others, right by some large boulders. Zaq looked at her expectantly.

'Ok.' She said. 'Ok.' She muttered again, more for her benefit. She hadn't directly told anyone about her problem, because Lyrea and Nellas and seen it (although the latter didn't quite see it for what it was), and Rhinnëa had simply overheard. Even she didn't know the details. She's up next, Rivera thought to herself.

Go for it, Lyrea said softly. Steadying herself with a deep breath, Rivera tried to begin again.

'Right,' she said, wringing her hands. 'You- well, you know I'm a hybrid, half-elf, half-human?' She only glanced up for conformation, then hurried on. 'Well, that causes loads of- um- problems.' She looked anxiously back at Zaq again, afraid of what she'd see in his eyes, only to find he was listening patiently. 'So, um, I-' she faltered. 'Basically, my DNA- what makes us who we are- has a massive flaw, like most hybrids. Sometimes it means they're sterile, but that's usually animals. Because humans and Elves are quite similar but aren't, they count as different species- for obvious reasons.' She wouldn't look at him now- she was desperately trying to figure out how to tell him without terrifying him or disgusting him. 'With every elf-human child, there is a-difficulty. Nellas' is that if she casts too powerful a spell, she'll die. Not even very hard spells- ones that wouldn't drain even the youngest of sorcerers. We'd found that out the hard way- but she didn't die!' She added brusquely. 'She nearly did. Which is why she relies on me so much and why the elves loved her- apart from being a child, they pitied her. And whether I like it or not, they were trying to help her. But not me,' she said sourly. Then her face softened. 'I'd rather they spent their resourced on her, anyway. And- I'm pretty much incurable.' Her face fell, her mismatched eyes filled with sadness. 'To fix me, they'd have to- make it happen,' she said evasively. 'And they couldn't do that. They didn't even know what it was. Until-' she stopped, choking on her words. 'It happened,' she whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. 'And then I left. I couldn't face what I did. And I meant to leave Nellas, because Lyrea would be safe- I mean, fire can't hurt a dragon-' she fell silent. Suddenly, she lifted her head, looking straight into the horizon.

'If all else fails, you can follow the horizon' were her Father's last words.

'I'm sorry,' she muttered. 'I haven't even told you. But- it would be easier if I could show you?' She almost wanted him to say no, so she could tone it down, make it less evil, because if he said yes, he could see it from her point of view, with all pain and power she had, and how she enjoyed it-

'Well?' She gasped, scared again at her own memories.

Zaq rubbed her arm, "If you want to. I can handle anything, but I want you to know that I won't hate you or be afraid or..." He swallowed and moved his hand up to cup her cheek before leaning towards her, his forehead leaning against hers. Right now, he didn't even care who saw [namely, his little sister and hers].

"I have a confession, I heard a little of Rhinnëa and Eyulf's conversation. If she can embrace the fact that he turns into a massive hairy beast, I can handle your...peculiarities. So let me in, Rivera."

*£*£*

Rhinnëa's green eyes traveled across the clearing and widened so that they were nearly popping out of her head. Zaq is going to kiss her! Zaq is going to kiss her! Zaq is going to- Her attention snapped back to Eyulf as he reclined across her bedroll. She made a shooing motion at him half-heartedly, staring impatiently across at Zaq and Rivera. When Zaq moved no further she scowled deeply and swore under her breath.

Clueless men. She sighed and glanced around in the waning light. Suddenly, she felt tired and snuggled under the top of her folded blankets. After only a few minutes of trying to ignore everything, she groaned and sat up. However, her view of her friend was obstructed by Eyulf kneeling in front of her, clasping his hands and loosing big, dewey brown puppy dog eyes.

"Fine, you can sleep with me-not that way-just get out of my way!" She peeked around him, then colored fiercely. What was she doing, spying on her friend? She turned back into her blanket and tried to ignore the warm mass hunkering down next to her.

'Okay,' Rivera muttered, automatically pulling away from him and clutching her hands together tightly. She took a deep breath, her heart thundering in her chest. No one had seen this, except Lyrea, and she was practically her soul mate and joint in the head. No one had ever seen something so deeply locked away in Rivera's thoughts, soul- and here she was, about to show Zaq.

I will be here, Lyrea said in a low voice. I will not leave lest you should need help. Relieved slightly by her dragons proclamation, Rivera pushed back her hair and turned to face Zaq.

'Don't hate me.' She pleaded quietly, before opening up her darkest memory.

~~~~~~
It was a warm say, the sun beating down on Nellas and I. We were at the small human village close to our previous elven home- they traded often with us, and allowed us to visit.
They had demanded we come that day. I didn't know why, but the two of us skipped along, Lyrea happy enough to settle in the forest nearby. She didn't stay for long- only a few minutes, until she found out that the reason we were called was for a lighthearted competition of sword fighting.
There were several boys our age- well, roughly. 13- 16, they were. I was never very good at judging ages, especially not humans. They were our competitors. We got along well enough, but there was one boy- Tylas- who was our closest friend. I think I was in love with him, but it was hard to tell. I was only, what, 13 or so? I'd imagine we'd have married if I-
Anyway, he wasn't there, so Nellas and I kept to ourselves, chatting aimlessly. It was only child's play, this contest, so it wasn't formal, but a large loaf of old Sel's- the baker of the town- best fruit cake, far better than I had tasted, was awaiting the winner. He often gave us little burnt bits, which still tasted fantastic.
So we were standing around, waiting for the 'umpire' to appear, whilst these boys- about seven or eight of them- where whispering and muttering, glancing at us. After I while, I got irritated, so marched up to them, Nellas in tow, to ask them if they had anything to say to us. To my surprise, they swung round and asked:
'Whats your problem?' I didn't know how to respond.
'Nothing!' I stuttered.
'No!' Another boy growled. 'We mean, your hybrid problem. Like, can you not have kids? We've all heard about your sisters, she's the worst spell caster there is, but what's yours?' I was annoyed, but I couldn't really answer, because at the time, I didn't know.
'Why?' I asked.
'Because the elves said they're chucking you out if you don't work it out soon. They think you're a "danger to their society"'.
'How do you know?' I asked.
'My father told me. They told him. They said they'll take away your little sibling if they don't work it out,' he replied. 'Far as I know, they want you dead.'
The boy meant no harm. He was being honest to me, but that word- in that context- just triggered SO am any things, my mothers death, my fathers leaving, everything else, being so alone, and that those elves wanted me DEAD, that something hidden inside me clicked.
As I looked back up at those boys, my compassion for the human race -ANY race- was gone. A pure hatred filled up inside me, not like when someone hurt Nellas, but worse. It boiled and writhed and after a few seconds, I couldn't hold it in.
Fire erupted everywhere. The screaming started. I threw more flames at every house of shop that wasn't burning. I must have knocked out Nellas in the process, because she was out cold behind me.
I stalked through the town, seeing every terrified face, relishing in my power, smiling and laughing, killing people wherever I saw them. Never had I felt so- fulfilled.
I realised then it was my glitch- and tried to fight against it, but it felt so good.
And then I saw him. The black haired, green eyed boy I loved, who was trying to get me to stop-
And I drew back my hand and killed him.
~~~~~

Rivera turned around straight away, slumping to sit on the floor.

'We left days after that. The elves wouldn't have me,' she chocked out, hugging herself.

Zaq clenched his jaw and stepped back. He swallowed hard. So if you love me, there's a fat chance you'll kill me? He raked a hand through his golden hair. That's...depressing. His features tightened as he looked away. That's even worse then depressing-it's downright agonizing... He groaned.

"We should probably go to sleep." He turned, then whirled back to face Rivera, "Eyulf and Rhinnëa are sharing-they're in the same-Eyulf has his arm around her and he's still alive-" he squinted at them "-I think."

"Maybe when I wake up this world won't be so completely insane." He shook his head as he walked off. "Left side or right, Rivera?"

Rivera stared at him with wide eyes.

'I just told you I've practically committed genocide- I killed people and enjoyed it- and you are asking which side I'd like to sleep on?' She looked at him with disbelief, not budging from her spot on the floor.

Her head fell into her hands as she furiously rubbed her temples.

Oh, God, she thought. I've fallen in love with a fool. She froze. Had she really thought that? Well, she may have loved him once, but if he had half a brain -which apparently he did not- Zaq would get away from her. Nellas Rivera could handle. Just. Lyrea could protect her. But Zaq.

'I'm not sure what's worse,' she mumbled. 'You hating me, or acting like nothing's wrong.'

"Oh, believe me-something is profoundly wrong, Rivera. That something is you isn't believe me when I said I could handle this." He faced her and crossed his golden arms over her chest. "I don't say things that I don't mean. Especially not to anyone that I care anything about. I wouldn't even lie to Rhinnëa. Like I said, if she can handle that Eyulf turns into a hairy animal, I can handle that you have...problems. And I can ." He clenched his as if to challenge her to argue.

"I know we obviously need to talk, but right now isn't the time. Eldárwen and Nellas don't need to hear us worry and Rhinnëa and Eyulf need to know. Now come on-I'm not afraid of you. Which may be retarded, but-" he raked his hand through his dirty blonde hair.

'I didn't say I though you couldn't handle this,' Rivera said quietly. 'I said you should be leaving me alone. Because while you stay close to me, I'm more dangerous. For God's sake, the last guy I loved died-' she stopped. It sounded like she said she loved Zaq. Biting her lip, she turned away from him.

Would you like to sleep by me tonight? To give you both some air to breathe- and think, Lyrea asked Rivera gently.

Yes, she replied. Yes, I would.

She rose from the ground, only glancing at Zaq when she said;

'I'm sleeping by Lyrea tonight. And when I say by her, I mean on her. Alone,' she added. She didn't want to look at him, afraid of what she'd see, so started off towards the great black dragon who had torn herself away from conversation for her rider.

"We'll excuse me," he mumbled, stalking over to where Eldárwen and Nellas were sleeping softly. "Good night," he whispered, then teasingly blew in her ear. He strolled over to his blanket and rolled himself up in the blanket.

*£*£*£*

Rhinnëa sighed contentedly, burrowing into the mass of warmth next to her. Soft light filtered through her closed eyes. She exhaled in dismay. It was morning and they needed to go. "Mmf." She rumpled her silvery hair then her eyes snapped open as her tummy rumbled. Her gaze shifted up to Eyulf's face. A small smirk played across his full lips. She folded her arms, which was hard considering the fact that she was plastered up against his broad chest.

"Hungry?" He peered down at her.

"Yes. And glad you kept your shirt on." She sat up with some difficulty. "Okay, let's find some food." She stood slowly, stretching. She narrowed her eyes at him as he lifted his hands to rest his head on. She shook her head and walked over to Lyrea. Rivera, she called in a sing-song way. I know you're there. Did you and Zaq fight?

Rivera opened her eyes sleepily at Rhinnëa's voice, forgetting the previous days occurrences in a moment of pure delight. Then it all came rushing back- what she'd shown to Zaq, and said. She groaned, pulling herself up from the crook of Lyrea's forearm where she'd slept. Clambering over the black scaled limb, she made her way over to Rhinnëa, desperately avoiding looking at Zaq.

'Umm...' She stared at the floor.

C'mon, Rivera muttered to herself. This is Rhinnëa.

'Not really,' she said shyly, clenching her fists slightly. 'I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if he was angry. We didn't quite argue, but... I was kind of rude...' She trailed off, looking up at her friend with horror on her face. 'He took it- well, I can't exactly say well- but better than I expected. And then I went and shunned him.' She groaned. 'Damn.'
