yeah and the same thing for light too. but I have one problem, I have to erase the shading outside the thing im shading. is that hows its done or is there a way to do that better?

Yup. There's a tool that should be called Magic Select to something like that. It should be one of the second tools in the list. Or you can hold the Ctrl key+Shift and click on the layers that make up your character's line-art, pelt, etc. Then you'll only be able to colour/shade/lighten the area selected. I'll see if I can pull up or make a tutorial for that. Hint: when you go to select your area's be sure the tool you are using before hand is a brush tool. And the cursor when on your layers with those keys pushed down (Ctrl+Shift) it'll be a rectangle with a + sign. (Ctrl+Alt) is a deselect option. It'll be a square with a minus sign.
I hope this doesn't cause confusion. You'll have to try it to see what I mean. It's a really neat feature. Though I do have to trim the edges some afterwards. Not much. Mostly around where there are poofs of fur.

By default, there is a tall toolbar full of options. The Magic Select, or called Auto select option should be on the second or third row of tools to use. It should kinda like a magnifing glass but have some line around. I'd likely be best having a tutorial for that. I'll try to make or find.
This the other way to the auto select.
You should have three windows on the right (default). Navigator, colours, and some other one. The navigator one should have two-four tabs. One will be layers. open that tab up. Make a new for your shading. Have that layer set to edit/work on. Click on it basically. Should be blue. Then you'll use Ctrl+Shift and your cursor should change to a rectangle thing. (This is if you have your brush/pencil in use.) You'll click on the layers behind your new one and get an overall shape of your character, and you will be able to shade the area you want without too much fine tuning.
I gotta go, so I'll look for some tutorials or try to make one tomorrow or ASAP.
