So, what did y'all think of the 1st one and are you looking forward to the 2nd?

:ecstatic:

I'm FAR too excited!
I love all things Tolkien and to see it all in movie form is amazing :)

My favourites are Fili and Kili, but I'm sure Bard the bowman will be high on the list!

Me and a lot of my friends are going opening night. And we'll be going with an actual hobbit. Unfortunately that's me. Yes I very strongly resemble a hobbit.

Hahaha! Aw, Hobbits are cool!

I've always thought of myself as a rider of Rohan!

Seeking advice from Lord of the Rings fans, is it customary to watch the original trilogy in order to understand the Hobbit movies?

Anyway, I watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last month. It was a fairly good fantasy adventure film. The visual style and the special effects were breathtakingly amazing, and I enjoy the performances of Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, and Andy Serkis in his cameo as Gollum. I didn't really care for the dwarves since they were so many of them, and felt interchangeable to me. Even though the film is notorious for being the first mainstream Hollywood movie to use a frame rate of 48 frames per second, it didn't bother my viewing as much; I'm not sure if it was entirely noticeable to me. My only problem with the movie was the drawn-out storyline, and the slow pacing.

Hopefully, The Desolution of Smaug is better than its predecessor, although I probably won't see it until it is on cable television. Lastly, Smaug looks like an interesting villain, and Benedict Cumberbatch gives him such as a menacing voice that makes him even more appealing to me.

I watched the second film today, and of course I loved it! :D I love the Hobbit and LOTR books and enjoyed this film more than the first one!

Not necessarily. Most of us who are fans have already seen the original LOTR movies before any of the Hobbit films since they've been out 10-12 years previously. When it comes to basics, just know that the Hobbit (being split into 3 films) is the prequel to what would lead into Lord of the Rings, in which involves Bilbo Baggins and his adventure. In LOTR, a following, yet different adventure involves his nephew, Frodo Baggins. Bilbo does appear in LOTR as an older man since time has passed by, but he is not involved as much. Even though I didn't grow up with the original trilogy at the time since I was about 5-7 years old, I'm happy that I am part of the fandom and got around everything. I've been a fan for about 2 months, read the books (Hobbit > Fellowship of the Ring > Two Towers > Return of the King) and seen all the movies. In your case, you can watch the Hobbit films first, then the LOTR films, and you'll be just fine. :)

Spoiler: show
Of course, I saw Desolation of Smaug a few days ago and it was awesome like I thought it would be. I was happy to see Legolas again and still continue to be a bad***. :D It was interesting to actually see how his character was different than in LOTR since this is before dwarves and elves made a compromise between each other and had their prejudice on one another. I will say this: When I saw Smaug on screen and heard his voice…My jaw dropped to the ground because he was so epic. OH MY GOSH WHAT A DRAGON HE IS! :glee:
