I know this topic is old and such, but I want to say that I am so sorry about this! 
I think your mom did this out of emotion, she probably was frustrated about something (as well as her not liking cats very much) and so took it out on you and your cat. It was definitely BAD communication on her part if that was it. You and your mom need to sit down and talk, and maybe have some therapist or some person to get some help to back you up if you need to.
I'd run away with my two kitties if my mom said that to me! o.O I also would wonder what was up with her.
Again, maybe you resolved this by now, and I know this topic is old, but it involves the life of your cat and how your mom treats you, and how you feel about these choices that are being made by her, so I just felt I really needed to say something here.

I fell into your situation LONG time ago. I bonded with a kitten back at my old den and to my astonishment, the kitten was really obsessed with me. I mean LITERALLY. It was obsessed. It'll sit on the arm of the chair I sat on during days I had school and it'll always bring me birds as presents. lol. It'll always lay on my lap too and won't bother going to anybody else. I absolutely loved that cat.
One day however, my parents got rid of my cat without my knowledge. I actually had to figure out it was gone. Now that was a sad moment in my life.
Over time, I'm sure things will get better for you Crystal. Hang in there.

That's just HORRIBLE! If I was you, I'd beat the crap out of my mother!
Yes, I really mean it! Or I would throw away something my mum likes a lot. You really don't deserve to lose your cat like that! Darn, I wish I had 300$...

I'm sorry to hear that SM and this actually reminds me that I can see my cat that I had to give to my grandma...just only because I have to come up with another $300 just to keep my cat for the year in the appartments
