As someone who recently lost her own cat, I know this feeling too well. Just so you know what to expect, the week after it happened was the most painful, but now it's been about a month and I'm starting to come to terms with it. It'll get worse before it gets better. Hang in there.

I appreciate that, but I've lost plenty of cats before so I do kind of know what to expect already. In fact I lost one last winter, too.

The thing that makes this case different is how young he was. It just doesn't feel like he was around long enough to have just wasted away like that. I expected him to stick around for a good 7 years or so more at least.
