Hmm... so I was right all along?
Does the word "turbine" sound like tur-bin, tur-bean, or tur-byne? I always thought people were saying something else when I heard turbin. Tur-byne makes the most sense to me. Anything with an -ine is like -yne, like fine, dine, wine, mine, and... y'know, turbine. In the UK it's said that way, so I guess I'm not torally wrong.
But that's what happens when you read more technical terms than you hear. There are so many words I can identify on paper but never say, it's almost ridiculous. Anti-aliasing is another one, just off the top of my head. I say it as al-eye-as-ing, but I know that's not right.
