I always try to help people out whenever I can, I hate it when people just watch someone struggle and do nothing about it! It honestly makes me lose faith in humanity. I can't think of any major situations where I've been able to make a huge difference, it's usually minor things I encounter in everyday life, such as giving up my seat on a packed train/bus to an elderly person, or holding doors open for people in wheelchairs. I don't even reflect over these things; to me it's just common sense. You simply don't insist on staying in your seat while there's a person nearby struggling to stand up. That's beyond selfish.
Lolwut? It is a legal requirement over here that you give up your seat if an elderly, disabled, or expecting mother is in need of it. At least, there are signs that say you have to, so I assume it is a legal thing.
But yeah, its still common decency rather than an act of kindness.
Yeh, it is. Sadly there are so many ignorant people on trains that alot of the time they are left struggling =( Atleast there are still a few decent folk out there :)

How is that common sense? Isn't it required by law that all passengers are sitting when the vehicle is in motion? If an elderly woman can get on the bus, I don't understand how it's a big deal if she needs to walk past a few extra rows to find an available seat. It is the nice thing to do, but it's not something that would cross my mind, by any means. If there are no seats remaining, then the bus is over capacity and shouldn't allow any more passengers for safety reasons.

Not over here no. Not that is enforced anyway. Buses do not even have seatbelts here.

From that post, it sounds as if you either never use public transport or that in America it is apparently a real mare to use public transport, especially for old and disabled people.
Its not every seat that you must give up here, just ones near the front / exists and such (designated as "Priority seats") use them but give them up when one who is obviously in more need of it asks. And yes it is common sense, if someone is in bigger need than you of something, it is common to want to give it to that person... Its the reason charity exists, no?

One more thing -they do no let people on busses when they are full, sure. But the point is, if there are seats way at the back of the bus, and an OAP comes onto the bus and you are sitting in one of the front seats, it is sensible (and law) to move your own lazy ass to the back seat.
We are not talking Rosa Parks here, its just decency.

So there are designated seats? That makes more sense. I wouldn't have known, public transportation is pretty much a joke where I live.
