Massive School Shooting at an Elementary School

I wouldn't own a gun personally but I won't stop others from owning one. I would still feel very uncomfortable. I had a chat with a friend tonight. It's not just kids (no matter how big or small) getting access to guns, it's about the state of mind of the person.

I don't care if this guy had a 'personality' disorder. He came in with the intent to kill, he knew what he was doing. He was an asshole. The kids that survived and saw that are going to be affected for the rest of their lives. There was a six year old kid who grabbed his friends and ran. Brave little guy.

I saw this earlier this evening on TV from my local news. It seems like everytime these things happen now, the shooters end up killing themselves. I know why. But still.

I don't know if this is the first time that something like this happens right next to the holidays, but asides from kids being victims, I think it's also making it more tragic for some. And we can't forget about the Oregon mall shooting that happened not even a week ago prior to this new one.

I think the worst thing out of all of this, is the young children who made it out alive and had to witness the crime unfold in their school. Like my mom was telling me, things like this do Not flee from a child's mind as easily as it does for an adult witness, due to the level of understanding.

One thing that seems to have some kind involvement in these shootings, especially for these people who have recently been committing the crimes around my age, is media such as video games. It's a shame that a lot of the games that I see get advertised on U.S. television now, are mostly this type of gaming that involves violence and shooting. Which doesn't make for a new young generation that is as, or more moralistic as the previous.

Yep, it's asshole time! Arkansas former governor Mike Huckabee attributed the shooting to the lack of religion and God's teachings in the school. Mike Huckabee: Newtown Shooting No Surprise, We've 'Systematically Removed God' From Schools

I knew some nut would come up with some disrespectful way to use this as an excuse.

Luckily there are also civilised and humane people over there. At least Barack Obama shed a tear while giving a speech.

I read this shooting on Facebook and it broke my heart, I don't understand why people do that.. no matter what state they are in. It's like they don't have a heart at all. Maybe they don't. These children would of had an amazing future ahead of them and then it's suddenly ripped away from them. It's ruined so many families and lives, such a waste of human life. I hope they rest in peace, and I hope the families are okay too. :C <333

I heard about this. It's just messed up. But there are some things that will restore your faith in humanity.

These killings plain and simple are tantrums. Temper tantrums of self-absorbed suicidal people throwing fits who think *their* anger is more important than other peoples lives and feel so righteous and over-inflatedly self-important to take other people out with them either for their misery, their ego to make news, or their "cause" (thinking of the Norway camp shooter from last year).

DGFone, the shooters mother wasn't at the school. He killed her at home, then continued on to the school. It's even doubtful if she worked at Sandy Hook School at all, other teachers are reporting to not be familiar with her.

I don't know that gun control is the answer to "solving" this trend. It wouldn't have made a difference in this case, the guns were legally owned by his mother who wasn't the one with the problem. It's root is cultural/social phenomenon to be sure, probably the result of several factors.

Abhorent is the word that comes to mind, but even that doesn't cut it. Everything is magic in Kindergarten, I'm just sick.

I hope this doesn't come across as insensitive but a few weeks ago, I was talking to a teacher about how I am planning to get certified. We started talking about how certain areas were not desirable because of the high crime rate. Then, you hear about school shootings that take place in supposedly 'safe' areas.
TBH, I personally don't think that the children were the targets. I think the shooter had something against his mother, and if he was already going to her school to kill her, might as well shoot some kids as well before the police arrive. Sounds sick, I know, but I won't be surprised if that's what it will end up being as what happened.
It's actually sounding like now that the mother was shot in her home, then he went to the school and shot her class. How horrific.

Well, it's not just former governor Mike Huckabee who is politicizing the tragic shooting, but Hollywood celebrities as well. However, Dan Shepard's comment feels honest, but it wouldn't have prevented this.

May I ask how many of them and have Hollywood friends that contribute to the increasing rate of violence in Hollywood movies? For example, the Columbine shooters and James Holmes of the Aurora theater shooting were influenced by Hollywood movies such as Natural Born Killers and the recent Batman movies.

Not to mention, they have bodyguards that are heavily armed to protect them.

I am going to polarize people by saying this and I do believe with all my being that this is not so much as a gun issue but a mental health issue. Even if you make strict rules and legislate, people will somehow get guns. Look at Prohibition and alcohol.
