Should society become secular?

Postby Baya » September 11th, 2011, 10:50 pm

In Canada, society is becoming more and more multicultural, and with that effect becoming more secular [without religious influence on politics or public service]. In schools, they are banning prayer and in official government buildings its already not allowed to wear any sort of religious symbol [including Hijabs, cross's and other assorted symbolisms].

For your own society's benefit, do you believe that making it more secular will make the country more productive and eliminate common societal ailments [such as crime, disease, poverty etc...].

All invalid arguments will be ignored. If you have no hard evidence to support your view, I will simply ignore it and move onto the one that is rational.

I personally believe making religion a private matter helps society in the long run as it prevents disputes, prevents certain abuses of the law, and allows for expanding horizons in education and medical care.

I'd say so, matie ~

Secular doesn't mean anti-religious, and some people don't get that. It just means religion has no place in the governing of that particular place. The residents are free to worship anyone from Allah to Zeus, Arceus to Zekrom ~

Yep. And I'm proud to say that Canada has made so many great strides in achieving complete secularism, but we aren't quite there yet. When France said they are banning all symbolism of Religion, the Islamics got mad saying "Oh you are doing this to just make us take off our hijabs!" Get over yourselves! It applies to EVERYONE! Not just Muslims, but Christians, Hindu's, Sikh's and even Buddhists! Jeez >_>

France was unjustified in doing that, IMO :P

I think they were totally justified, only because of the purge of religions in the country. Religion is a private matter, and it always should remain a private matter. I don't want me kids going to school, and not being allowed to learn a certain thing because of the school's religious policies or my own! That's just so disgraceful, when a child is denied knowledge over a book that was made to keep them in line. I want my kid to be a rebel, and learn the ways of the world!

What do you mean? In France? They banned all religious symbols on the streets including, but not limited to: Hijabs, Nikabs, Burkas, Cross's, Crescent Moons and anything that really represents a faith. They did it to protect their culture and their way of life, which I think is justified. When you move from one country to the next, you can't just take anything you like with you and leave the hardships only. If so, your culture should not be societies. You can practice that at home, with YOUR family.

Which is something I hate in Canada. People who come from other nations that think the country's culture is not their own and don't even bother to learn English because they feel they don't have to. Alot of people do that with faith too, but the government currently isn't taking any additional steps.

Oh. Well yes, I support that. Forgive my random outbursts of incompetence ~

Yes, keep it in the home please. I mean, go ahead an wear crosses and all that, just don't plaster it all over the country, hm?

No see, I don't care that you made that outburst. I'm glad you did. That's the point of these posts. Not to praise God every other post -.-

And those that tend not to keep it at home are the same ones eliciting a negative response from those around them. I try to be polite to as many people as I can, but when they won't leave me or my family alone with their religious BS, I get intensely upset. A woman told my mom she would burn in hell right near my door, and I was prepared to smack her with her bible.

I should push for it to be illegal for people of any faith to go door to door to spread their "word".

I'm a little immune to it, I hear it all the time. I used to get very angry, these people were actually spiteful towards me. Ha ha, you're going to hell, I will live in bliss. Bite me.

Harumph :P

I don't want someone to read this and report either of us, so I will stop here and say:

I'm very supportative of secular societies, and all countries should have them!
