During the early productions of the film, Naanda was Nala's mother and Sarabi's sister. She is Nala's mother in both the January and May 1990 versions of the "King of the Beasts" screenplay (one of The Lion King's early titles), and is only called Sarabi's sister in the January 1990 screenplay.[1][2]
