Friction has been slowing down the Earth's rotation, making days shorter ever since it was formed 4.5 billion years ago. The force of the sun and moon on the oceans causes the water to move, and when it moves, friction slows down the spin.

In a few million, if not billion years, one day will be much longer than 24 hours. In prehistoric times, one day was about 18 hours.
