Thanks for your kind words guys. I had a cry yesterday and told him what he'd be losing, and also what he'd be gaining. I do think he's very brave to be doing this, particularly for the reasons he gave me which I thought were very sweet and sensible.

It's kinda a double edged sword...

He's not going to be immediately shipped off to Iraq or whatever and he's told me he spoke to some who have never even left the country and they joined in 1992!. Yeh, English soldiers do get sent over there, but it's only a handful of the army. We only really get news coverage from that side of things so I think that was the first thing that sprang to mind which upset me.

Yes, this is true. Most of the NATO forces in Afghanistan are American.

I am scared for him and im scared about being alone five days a week, but I am supporting him (I helped him with preparation for his BARB test the other day and putting him before myself. He seems really driven to do this and I will be there, even if it is a painful thought to be apart from him for long periods of time. Our relationship is so strong though so I have faith =)

Sounds like everything will be fine, to me. Although it kinda depends on what branch of service he'll be in. Some are better than others.
