Was Zira mentally unstable to begin with?

As others have stated, I don't think that Zira was quite as insane before Scar's death, which in its turn made her into the pyschopath that we see in SP. I personally believe that she struggled with a lot of issues in her cubhood and maybe even adolescence, and she was likely very unstable even before Scar's arrival in her life and his death; I mean, to go as crazy as she did means that she had to have at least been slightly unstable in the beginning.

I just think that her obsession with Scar was reaching a new level when Scar's death happened. It pushed her over the edge, in my opinion.

Well, Zira was probably "evil" for a while. She probably had a lot of issues while she was a cub and younger adult, thus turning her more stone-hearted. She probably got really close with Scar, and maybe he even confided in her about his plans to kill Simba and Mufasa, and she was on his side the whole time. It made her grow even more evil. Then when Scar died, that's when she really lost it. She probably got to be even MORE of a psychopath when Nuka died.

I aver that she was probably unstable since birth. However it is that she met Scar, (which we speculating fans really don't know,) a healthy person doesn't latch on to another human being (uh, lion?) that obsessively.

Whether or not she was homocidal before Scar died, now I think that's a whole other question. Really. I'm sure it was a different KIND of mentally unstable prior to his death and didn't turn *murderous* until after.

I wish I could select more than one option for the poll, because I would say a perfect storm of circumstances caused Zira to spiral out of control. Experts tell us that multiple factors give rise to mental disorders. So the deaths of Scar and Nuka, the environment of the outlands, the banishment, and genetics probably all gave rise to her mental self. I'm guessing a chain of events slowly lef to her getting worse and worse. Now I realize I'm applying psychology to a cartoon lion from a Disney sequel, but several universal themes are present in both real life and The Lion King, such as personality, trauma, stress, etc.

Well, after she heard that Simba killed Scar I kinda can understand she wanted revenge on him.
I mean.. she loved him so much and then heard he got killed.
I'm not a person of revenge myself, but I can understand she wanted that..
Altough Simba wasn't even the one who killed him, but how could she know? xD

So, yeah.. I'd say after Scar died still. x3
I actually think before that she was quite normal. ^^
And just got along with Scar..somehow. xD
